Why do OAVs—like Macross Zero—take so long between episodes? The OAVs started in Nov' of '02, and the 4th episode is going to come out on the 28th of this month. Why is it taking 6 months in between episodes? The graphics were good, but it really shouldn't take that long to animate it. I am confused as to why Bandai Visual is tormenting me by prolonging my Macross Zero experience (and it is quite good, too). Any help?

THey have to see if each release will sell before they can start making more. That research takes time. It's all about money.

Not to mention that OAVs have bigger budgets than typical, the cost to produce an episode maintaining the quality of the first episode (uses lots of money to get a good selling point) can be rather expensive.

If I remember correctly, OVAs also have looser production deadlines, meaning a studio can take a bit more time and put a bit more care into an OVA production than a TV series. If Macross Zero is as big as I keep hearing, then that's probably what's happening...little bit of TLC over a speedy release.

And really, that's a good thing.

So...were you trying to quote Meson because you agreed with him (hence the happy face)?

If you want to "quote" someone, use the [quote] tags.

Also, since the people paying for the DVDs are pretty much paying for the full cost of production, since there aren't any sponsors to offset the cost, the cost of a single half-hour OVA episode is usually between 4800 and 9600 yen (divide by 100 for the approximate cost in American dollars), so you usually have to space out the release dates between episodes by a couple of months each, otherwise, they'll be coming out at a rate that would be too expensive for much of the audience.
