I'm guessing the reasons people buy OP/ED collections is 'cus they're cheaper than CDs which might not even be in print?

Who knows. Usually, for popular anime, they release a "Complete Best" collection which includes the full versions of all of the OP/ED plus a DVD of the OP/ED Animations. I'm pretty sure I've seen these for Gundam SEED and GSD. They are about the same price as the average Japanese DVD (around $40).
But the #1 DVD only had 5000 copies sold? I didn't realize the market was THAT small. |

It's cause the Gundam openings and endings are IMO some of the most awesome things ever animated. They're kind of cultural icons within cultural icons. With this option the buyer gets the actual animation in high def to go with the openings.
Less popular outside of Japan actually and in some cases even in Japan. When Haruhi came out anything associated with it was deified for a couple years afterward, and of course she was no exception. However nowadays the camps seem split between people who think she's solid and people who feel she took the limelight out of the hype over one role and doesn't belong in the top celebrated class of seiyuu/singers. |
