Once again, another great edition of Shelf Life. I managed to pick up all six volumes of Figure 17 at AX2004, and I couldn't agree more with SakechanBD that it is one of the best titles ever made.

I saw the dub of Birth back when Streamline called it Planet Busters. It and Megazone still make me wonder how Tatsunoko was able to stay in business so long in the 80's. Oh yeah, by selling Macross to Harmony Gold. If I were Big West, I'd also be pissed that a company that produced more sub-par animated shows than Toei would give away the rights to a quality title. BTW, if you want to sell Megazone part 2, mention that the guy who animated the child porn in Kite worked on it.

It's too bad the show is so underrated. Hardly anone has heard of the show, but the depth of the characters is really something. It's too bad MB didn't bother advertising for it. |

I just want to know... why hasn't anyone arrested the bastards who make KidsBop for child pornography or something yet? Forcing kids to sing those songs and then sell it to kids is jsut wrong on so many levels. Now I was annoyed when I heard some songs I liked on there, but when I hear what risque songs they're putting on there it just becomes wrong and disturbing.
Hmm.. no other comments, sjtu glad someone else hates that series of CDs shown on TV. -Xenos |

I own the first four and seen all six at this point and hartily agree with Sakechan and Areaseven. I did see it advertised when I walked into a Media Play and saw the trailer running (followed by Twelve Kingdoms) on a big screen. Not much, but not nothing.
I do wonder if the show had trouble picking up fans for a couple other reasons. The episodes on the first disk are rather slow (the best episodes I thought were on disks 3, 4 and 6)both on the drama and action side. Also the episode count/length and the unconventional details of the story such as th ages of the main characters, not countered some other factor (such as the reputation of CLAMP on Cardcaptor Sakura) may have also had something to do with it. It is sad. A lot of good shows (Daiguard, Kino's Jouney) seem to suffer the same fate. All the Best, Nani? |

I think KidsBop is one of those things that are safe to assume EVERYONE hates. =/ Kids + "Hey Ya" = 6 year old stoner fest Haha. The link to NOW points to the manga. Ha. Pointless and idiotic tidbit. Anyway, onto the column... Hah. This is one of the funnier ones I've read. I love the discripition on the DBGT (though why it's rental shelf material is beyond me. Perhaps funny lameness?). It pretty much sums up the whole series ^^;. You've almost convinced me to buy Wedding Peach, for the utter lameness (and pontential laughfests which occur) of Mahou Shojo. If I wasn't dead poor, then maybe. I'll keep it on my maybe's. Ne? What do the R's and J's stand for? Well now I feel stupid. Sexadolls? Is this real? =P Haha. Bamboo, your H reviews are the greatest. It was worded so perfectly (it took me a few seconds to figure out what "Man Berries" were)... my goodness. Cheesy H at it's best ^^; Ahhh. Nice column this week. =P |

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! For DBGT... To me, it's one of those shows that I'll watch if there's really nothing else to do. I don't dislike it enough to make it Perishable, but it's not something someone could force me to buy. Hence the Rental Shelf. Just good enough to spend a few dollars on. 
I could be wrong, but from what I can tell, the Rs and Js are the locations in which each story takes place. Saber Marionette R takes place in Romana, whereas the Saber J series takes place in Japoness. Thanks again for your feedback, I appreciate it! |

So is this Saber Marionette the actual 1st work in the series, or is it more like a prequel. Also, I never thought J & R stood for that - what about J to X? I haven't seen that one yet, but Maybe they're going to get X-rays or something like that?

Saber Marionette R is kind of like a bridge between the manga and the Saber J series. It's just kind of a floatey entity between those properties that doesn't really fit in anywhere. X stands for Xi'an. Interestingly enough, you also have "J to X" which can be read "J Two X," and so it's a play on XX...which in genetics defines a female (XX = female, XY = male). spoiler[Given some of the events later on in that series, this begins to make more sense, since they're trying to become human.] |
