Trying out tons and tons of new fall shows but so far I'm only loving Tegami Bachi Reverse (it's a pretty sweet story when it's not mucking around with fillers), Kuragehime (for some reason the apartment complex reminds me a little bit of my dorm and it's been amusing so far, it even made jellyfish look cute!), and Star Driver (plenty of eye-candy and I've got my fingers crossed that it has a more complicated plot than it's shown so far). Also tried out The World God Only Knows, Squid Girl, and Otome Yokai Zakuro but I'm not sold on them yet. I'm giving TWGOK one more episode before I decide if I'll drop it or not and the other two are cute but just not what I'm looking for right now.
Speaking of what I'm not looking for right now, just saw some of Jing King of Bandits and I want that hour and a half back. It probably doesn't help that the girl who brought it to the club only had the second or third disk so we started with episode 8 (and she admitted she hadn't seen it in years) but that made absolutely no sense, the art and animation were horrible, and it wasn't intentionally funny. Bleeeeeeeh.

I doubt you'd like Bandit Jing anymore if you'd started from the beginning because several of the stories are two parters and the first episode doesn't give you any background. I personally saw it as hipster garbage and trying to ape what your typical Shinjuku teenager would be into because of what the main character dresses like. That ending song is amazing though. It's still one of my favorites to this day.

I've been watching Angel Beats and it's meh. Episode five was the best in terms of comedy, but I have a hard time giving a crap about any of the characters.

I don't know what's come over me, but I've really wanted to watch some older, lesser-known stuff lately. I've always like watching obscure shows (I enjoy making references not many people understand; sue me), but I've never actively done it on purpose before. Finding them used for like $5 certainly doesn't help. Anyways, I'll just give brief rundowns since they were all pointless and you can't really say much about them anyways; I guess that's the 90s for you.

Dragon Half: Hilarious. The first episode was better than the second, but it was still funny. I actually had to switch to the Japanese audio since it was clear the timing wasn't translated well, and it was large improvement. The actors weren't bad, although Jessica Calvello was her usual inconsistent self, but it the comedic timing was so far off it was annoying. That's also quite possibly the best ending sequence ever; Beethoven would be proud. Also: Boobies.

Demon Fighter Kocho: It was funny, but nothing special. It does have a good rewatchability, though. The dub was also surprisingly good considering it's age. It helps that the Inconsistent Calvello delivered one her good performances (with great behind the scene stuff as well). Also: TITTYBOOBYTITTYBOOBY

Kekko Kamen: Wow. This show is certainly...something. It was funny and entertaining, but geez was it absurd. I'm at a loss of words, mostly because the show was at a loss of clothing. I may have to check out some more Go Nagai stuff if he puts this much energy and excitement into his shows. It should go without saying, but: Lots of boobage.

Miyuki-chan in Wonderland: This one sucked. It was literally two 30 minute segments of Miyuki getting lost in some world with lesbians all around her, but there wasn't a lot of yuri action, which I thought there would be, honestly. It was seriously like watching paint dry, because something was happening, but at the same time nothing was. This, surprisingly and disappointingly, didn't have any boob action.

Maze OVA: It was OK. Boy Maze was annoying as hell, but luckily he only has about 2 minutes of screen time, even though one those times is quite disturbing. Everyone else was just there. I get the feeling this was made with the idea that you knew everything about the characters and about their world, so it did make me feel left out since I had no inkling of the character's relationship with eachother. The TV Series sounds like it does this, but after watching that first episode, I don't think I wanna see it. It was just too painful. The dub was a mixed bag because it had it's decent moments, but they were quickly followed by some extremely stiff delivery and improper lip-flap matching (there's a total part missing in the intro where the lips are moving, but words aren't coming out because they were said 30 seconds beforehand). There was also some slight boobage in this one, too.

What did I learn: The 90s were filled with lots of OVAs that had no kind of substance or resolution, but were fun in their own ways. There were also a lot of [normal looking] boobs being thrown around. A lot.

Sorry for the double post, but it's been a day.

Continuing with my current theme of watching older titles I watched both Kite and Kite Liberator since they arrived today. I have very different opinions of both, so I'll separate them:

Kite- Fantastic. You could really tell that the creators knew they had 45 minutes to tell a story and they did a hell of job of not only making an interesting one, but also one that gives a real sense of closure. The pacing was amazing and every second mattered, not wasting a single second (I watched the edited version) on anything irrelevant that doesn't tie into the final two scenes at all. And the final few scenes are tragically wonderful that create an ending not seen too often since it's a real, non-cliff hanging ending. Also, not to be overlooked, the animation and art blend together so well and create real eye candy that makes it feel like a real world filled with real people and that when a character is shot, you see their pain. I don't want to say this transcends anime, because it is still an anime, but it's not like anything else I've ever seen; I think this is the same way people feel about Miyazaki films in that it's anime, but it's better anime. I feel Kite is one of those handful of shows that you can just call "Beautiful".

Kite Liberator- What a disappointment. I don't want to sound like some kind of Kite expert-snob because I just watched the show, but I feel this shouldn't even have Kite in it's name since it's so radically different. The first Kite was cold, gritty, and beautiful, but this...this is light-hearted, somewhat goofy and not gritty at all; it retains nothing that makes Kite great. It's filled with lame cliches, a ridiculous subplot with the out of space stuff and the Bone Monster, and it's side characters are just plain idiotic (especially the cop and bar owner). Liberator is just a sad, sad OVA that had a great platform to work off of, but instead of doing a swan dive, the did a belly flop. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by a show in all my anime-watching life.

You should really track down the Maze series on Netflix or something. Very bizarre. LOTS of brother/sister talk between the Mazes that comes off really oddly. Still pretty good overall, if the it was still in print I would probably buy it.

Got to disagree on Kite Liberator. I thought it was glorious. Oh so many questions raised and nothing answered. Not gritty? Don't you think the on the surface goody main character spoiler[coldly murdering the space food guy and the driver WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT was gritty?] What could drive a seemingly sweet schoolgirl to that?

Love it!

Watching Monster atm. Only early in the series.

Its genuinely creepy which is rare for anime. I am not sure what it is about the series but the arcs are quite predictable and yet as a whole the series feels unique and original. Definitely see western late night television influences.

I didn't realise just how long the series is, hope it keeps its form. I have this bad habit of having to watch all episodes of any anime I watch and the last two series I watched were a real pain to get through.

In the process of borrowing tons of stuff from friends at the moment so currently I'm plowing my way through Samurai Seven. I'm liking it pretty well actually, I've seen the movie and I'm not bothered by how they choose to stretch out the material (and I really like how the music is reminiscent of the music in the film) but the art is bugging me. All the designs are cool but there are times when the art/animation is waaayyyy off and not just for a few seconds but for half an episode (episode seven I'm looking at you). Holy cow, I mean, I had seen clips before but you've kinda gotta see it in context to get how bad it is, I'm starting to understand all the Gonzo hate now.

I'm watching Hidamari Sketch and this is the sort of anime that I would watch alone. It's just ridiculously cute and everything's so happy-go-lucky. It's seems like a very energetic show because of one character. If I think about it more and more, this show will probably remain as sub-only. It has a lot of references to Japanese culture and the characters look like 10 year olds. That said, I guess I like the show because it's like a mishmash of many slice of life animes in a blender.

I have to watch Kekko Kamen again. Pretty amazing stuff. And Kekko Kamen herself is pretty [ahem] "in your face". Wink

That episode isn't off at all. Quite the opposite. That's the work of Hisashi Mori, one of the better animators to work in the past couple of decades. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNA59u3MjlE

Look at the timing of the animation in that episode. That dude is just crazy-- he has huge range, from very slow to super fast.

Currently watching the second disc of the first half of Big Windup Oofuri. It is a pretty fun show, despite some characters who always look kind of goofy. Why: I got it really cheap, and heard good things about it. BTW was part 2 ever released seperately, or did they just do the SAVE edition really quick?

Also with the Japanese love of baseball, it is kind of odd that there are not that many baseball anime. The only 3 that I can think of are Big Windup Oofuri, Princess Nine, and the one about WW2 girls baseball (can't remember the name). Did I miss any???

Apparently, sales for Big Windup 1 were so disappointing that Funi reps announced on an ANNCast that the company would not be releasing the second part.

Yep. Major. It's like the biggest one, on its fifth or sixth season by now.

If you do a genre search you get 30 results (24 -if you take out sequels and remakes).

Cross Game, H2, and One Outs are other baseball series from this decade
