The pacing continues to be like a freight train. Its conceptually interesting but its just been to rushed for what are major character moments to seem impactful, even though the plot seems interesting.

It sounds like its sequel status is a lot less nominal than I anticipated and that might be it for me.

Ep3 edit: Relentless "stuff happening" just lost my interest- its a drop for me.

Episode 03: Armor
----------------------------------

Summary:

After reluctantly considering Yamato as a candidate for the newly formed Samurai Troopers, the group is presented with a cutting edge form of virtual training, where one hour in the real world equates to one day in the virtual one. Later, a large amount of demon energy is detected, and the Troopers are sent in response. After a brief battle, they encounter a surprise enemy.
----------------------------------

Comments:

So we get our last Trooper added to the ranks and a mixed reference of Dragon Ball meets Inception, where they have a virtual training room with accelerated time mechanics. The show is basically starting things from scratch and trying to build these new Troopers from the ground up with a little bit of (semi-)tragic events and/or enigmatic motivational circumstances. Like said for the last episode, it's so much more compelling than the OG series, where none of the Troopers had any kind of backstory. Heck, the demons generals felt for more fleshed-out, because one of them ends up turning good guy about halfway through.

I also like how Gai is being positively manipulative. Kaito acknowledges having to shoot, what was once, his grandmother as triggering his will to fight. And Gai beating on Musashi got Yamato to activate his under-suit and armor. I think Gai is a lot smarter than we're lead to believe. Even though all the Troopers are roughly the same age (not sure about Ryuusei), I think Gai being raised as a demon in a very militarized culture will give him an edge in becoming the eventual leader.

The one thing that did pique my interest, though, is Ryuusei having that little moment during the training. I wonder if he's got some condition that's yet to be revealed, or if it has something to do with the armor. He did mention that the under-suits are supposed to protect the wearers from the negative energy of the armor, which adds a whole new level of nuance, should it turn out the armors have some kind of side effects after long usage. They sort of addressed this in the OG series where, at one point, it was like feeling too much aggression would make you turn evil, kind of like Star Wars and the dark side of The Force.

The reveal of Shion at the end also has me wondering just how many virtues there actually are in this revamped story. The OG series had one virtue per armor, and there were nine armors total. This one seems to have, at least, a dozen different characters with armors (demon and Trooper side), which could potentially expand the lore even more. I think it's interesting that Shion seems to be going rogue and freelancing as a guy who doesn't care who he has to kill to stop the fighting. Maybe it's the disillusioned reality he came to accept after years of being a Trooper and just decided "to hell with it."

I wonder if we'll see any other OG characters, or if the show will just create some new ones to help fill in the 35-year gap. Production value remains pretty awesome, though. I'm really digging the the thick line detail. It seems like they're even going out of their way to do it on background citizens who are only on-screen for like, a few seconds.

Episode 04: Combat
----------------------------------

Summary:

After the appearance of Shion, the Troopers learn about his and Ryuusei's past, discovering the latter had been poisoned by a demon several years prior. It is also revealed that the demon barrier had actually been breached around then, and that the original Samurai Troopers were sent into the demon realm for reconnaissance, until contact with them was lost.
----------------------------------

Comments:

Okay, so Shion's not a demon, he just went rogue. It also makes a lot of sense that he helped create the current armor system, which makes me wonder if the original Troopers have different sets of armor compared to the new Troopers and how exactly that works? If the old Troopers are stuck in the demon realm and the new crew summons the armor, do the old crew lose there's, or are there actually two sets of armor? I guess we'll probably find that out, later.

Shion also seems to not completely distrust DST, and they don't seem to be in a hurry to arrest him for breaking into the facility. So it'll be interesting to see what he brings to the able as an eventual ally, now that the truth was also revealed that Ryuusei took that poison bullet for him. And given the insurmountable amount of enemies DST has against them (one emperor, nine generals, and probably endless foot soldiers), they'll need every armored person they can get. If any of the old Troopers are still alive in the demon realm, I would think their ages play a factor in their current capabilities. But again, we'll just have to wait and see.

That sword Shion took will probably be the difference-maker. That, or maybe another armored person will show up. Heck, the way things have turned out, it wouldn't even surprise me if the demons won in warding off the Troopers, at least. In the OG series, when things were dire around the start, there was this priest that would show up, who ended up being a descendant from a long line of protectors of the armor. That priest eventually sacrificed himself to stop the big boss in a battle and later had his place taken by one of the demon generals. If that guy is still alive, maybe he'll show up here? 35 years is a lot of time to fill, and they can pretty much do anything, at this point.

Episode 05: Sadness
----------------------------------

Summary:

Continuing their battle at the demon gate, the Troopers encounter Emperor Ramaga, who temporarily turns Gai's allies against him, until Ryuusei appears to dispel the dark magic hypnosis. It is then revealed that Ramaga was the one who poisoned Ryuusei, transforming the latter into a demon to fight the Troopers. After defeating their comrade, Ryuusei hands command of the Troopers to Gai before passing. In a rage-fueled attack, Gai manages to break Ramaga's mask revealing his true identity.
----------------------------------

Comments:

BI~G TWIST, here. Ramaga is Ryo, the former leader of the Troopers from the OG series. I didn't see that coming. But it somewhat addressed the curiosity I had about what the armor and/or demon energy does to a person after a prolonged period. I won't say Ryo was wearing the armor for 35+ years, but it could be he finally turned from wearing it too much. Or maybe since he got lost in the demon realm, he made a desperate choice to try and survive and somehow turned into Ramaga?

The flashback Ryuusei had with Ryo in it wouldn't line up, though. Ryuusei looks pretty much as old as he did in the present, which leads me to believe either Ryo had been bad for a while, or maybe he stayed in the demon realm too long and got possessed by Ramaga's spirit? Neither series has really delved into demon realm world-building mechanics, so I hopefully we'll get more of an explanation in the new series.

I got a sort of Star Wars vibe and felt a lot of this demon/armor energy is kind of like The Force. It's more in the sense of just having superpowers, in general, and less about the kinds of things a Jedi or Sith could do with it. Like, you summon the armor, get a magical weapon, and maybe have a specific power or something. But that energy comes with a caveat and basically is powered by one's idealism, hence the virtues for each armor. However, much like The Force, the person's idealism can gravitate them to the lighter or darker side, and we get Troopers (Jedi) versus Demons (Sith).

The Troopers are down a man. Although, it looks like Shion's faith has been restored. So it'll be interesting to see how that turns out. Will he inherit Ryuusei's armor and virtue to honor his memory? Or since he made the armors in the first place, will come up with some new hybrid idea as an improvement? I feel like there are a few ways that can go. And now that we know Ryo's the villain, what about the other OG Troopers that got stuck in the demon realm? Curiouser and curiouser.

Iirc a previous episode mentioned that Ryo and the OG group disappeared 5 years ago prior to the current events. So Ryo has only been possessed for the last 5 years.
