Things ended up mostly as speculated here. That includes Uozumi being a shikigami and those vile smoothies helping to keep the curse power under control. Not sure what to make of gramps though, Byoki extended his lifespan but has seemingly no control over him and given those beads he is not considered evil.

Anybody else think, "Sit, girl!" when he put the beads on her wrist?
Poor wannabe bf, he thinks he's got a chance and she instantly blows him off as soon as Uozumi shows up.
Patch Miroku finally makes his entrance. Wait, those skulls weren't just props?

The way Nanoka makes use of Shiraha as an information source is a bit questionable but oh well.
The episode provided a lot of information. The big question is which (or multiple) of the five apprentices tried to kill Mao. I am not sure on the course of events but did they frame Mao after failing to kill him or was Byoki appearing what saved him from the assassination attempts? If that resulted in Mao going nuts and taking out most of the clan... meh, clans who go about things that way have no future anyway.

And kodoku rears its stupid head yet again. And this is the second series just this season to invoke it. :/

Which other series invoked it and why are you so anti-kodoku?

Marriagetoxin just used it in the Sound Master's backstory. I'll just quote my rant from that thread to answer your question.
"It's all over anime, like off the top of my head, Naruto had Sai's and Zabuza's backstories involve this, Kingdom employs it for Kyou Kai's revenge tour motivation, Dark Gathering had Yayoi and her room full of possessed dolls battling it out, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens used it for Xianming's past (but with only a 50% loss rate), and InuYasha and Yashahime used it a lot with demons [so I was fully expecting it to show up sooner or later in Mao]. I suppose the idea is embedded in the culture from ancient Chinese curse magic. There's a reason there's a specific name for it. I just think it's a really dumb way to lose a lot of highly trained talent even if the lone survivor is really badass. The one they killed was probably pretty badass too."
It's one thing to do the original curse practice of using poisonous insects, which are prolific and you only need one at the end anyway, but doing it with already skilled people you've invested years in training is just a dumbfoundingly stupid idea, unless you really do only need a one-and-done victor, which is never the case for the entities running these evil groups.

I agree with you. To tell you the truth, when I posed my question, I didn't really understand what kodoku was, even after googling it.

Huh, mr. rapist and strangler was dealt with pretty quickly (thankfully). I suppose there is a limit to how much a rich family can cover up. I wonder if all the apprentices who took on the task of killing Mao became immortal. If so maybe they were all cursed with immortality until one of them becomes the next leader of the clan (or is the only one left). Not sure if that means that the one who is controling the frogs is another former apprentice.

Ugh. A whole army of Pepes. At least these frogs aren't as repulsive as Pepe.
I could certainly use Nanoka not screaming her head off. And what was with that lengthy recap in the middle of the episode? Things haven't gotten quite that complicated yet to need it. I mean, if I can still pretty much follow it, it must be doing ok. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That is sadly something some older anime or anime based on older source material do. The recap at the start of the episode grows longer and longer over time and recaps during the episodes become more common.

The unclear and mysterious past is probably the thing I like most about the show. Every few episodes we get more information yet it only leads to more questions forming. New this week was Mokuzu having been used by someone to change Haimaru into Byouki. Refreshing to see him not being immortal like all the others thus far but it means having no clue to his boss.

Add to my last post that the show is pretty fast paced with the developments. This week had Mao nearly dying due to another assassin and next week shows flower guy being in trouble while Nanoka is running from Byouki in modern times. The latter could be a dream or something though.
