Roshidere has got the sort of heightened reality school drama stuff I vibe with and am such a sucker for even when it's not my favorite thing airing this season (in some sense that's Losing Heroines, in another it's Cheer For You). Even when the class politics spends the first half or so of its run shifted from the characters reflecting on their personal dynamics and how they interact with others in a way that demonstrates these politics being another perspective of the ways we present ourselves to others (in a show that's all about those contrasting, sometimes conflicting gaps in between), to essentially bureaucratic arguments that can only go so far with the limited run time of this episode and up to what we've gotten so far, with this episode being no exception. Although, if this were the sort of series that also focused on building up intricate class politics to the point that we would need to do even less with the peanut gallery, it'd be a meaningfully different show than the one I've been enjoying, so I can't say I mind per se.
I am terribly fond of Nonoa and she's making me want to fast‐track the books in the same way Yuki's gregarious, impish, scene‐chewing self‐indulgent bravado has. Which, speaking of, it was convenient of this show to immediately switch to our resident proper lady otaku living it up doing exactly that to remind me who my favorite is. She's just so consciously, knowingly ridiculous, she reminds me of when I played it up as a kid and that isn't even the best part. Hard not to smile when she's allowed to let loose despite her circumstances. Burst out laughing at Ayano dutifully fanning her, because of course she would, and because of course Yuki would accept that in a heartbeat. Ayano is an adorable little foil to Yuki's wealth of social knowledge that frequently ends with her taking an L, and it's pleasant seeing her trade barbs with someone that isn't her pwecious big brother, particularly for Ayano, because unlike him, her hyperfocused dedication means Yuki kinda just always ends up taking an L by setting her charades up in the first place.
It's funny, I really do like Alya a lot and like how she bounces off of other characters, and otherwise find her headspace one that's easy to get into. But now she's my third‐favorite character, more‐or‐less.
Real self‐indulgent of you, too, show, at the end there. Just gotta snicker and roll my eyes at that.

It's funny how Taniyama and Nonoa are Akita and Bocchi only their personalities are like the opposite of what they were on the show.
Nothing says a stellar romcom MC like being able to comment on a woman's chest to make her relax and not even get a punch to the face over it. And now she's got him guessing just how big they actually are!
Yuki does her best anime villain impression and Ayano is the best at deflating her moments.
I think it needs to be said that it was clear Alya could hold her own in the debate and that's entirely why Nonoa used the plants to throw her off because Alya doesn't do well with surprises or when she's thrown off which is why Masachika had to come in. I'm hoping we're seeing Alya slowly learn to be more confident and capable as she tries to prove herself, to both Taniyama and the audience, that she's worthy to be the running mate Masachika chose.

We have finally made to the part of the series where it shows it's hand as a none battle, battle Show, i will i have never seen a debate as a battle system in these medium.
So maybe it is because i have read the LN, but i think the way Sayaka is animate and her VA voice direction makes it more clear her reason (this is from season 2 stuff if we get that) She is a shipper and ships Masachika and Yuki hard
I do like how they handle this debate. i will also note that they are keeping a part of the LN i did not expect them to keep, so in every LN there is a scene at the end where a piece of the Russian is not translated at all in volume 1 (Episode 4 of the anime) it is the "I Love You" though Masachika thoughts did translate it later. and in Volume 2 (episode 8) it was the "Because it is you".
And now we have been introduced to Nonoa, the scariest character in the show, who is just like Masachika is a Lazy Genius. the difference is that Masachika use his power for others, while Nonoa only use hers for herself, she is not an evil character per ser, but the amount of power she has, is scary. she would be the villian of any story if she cared. This is a Season 2 spoiler She is the only person in the school that knows that Yuki and Masachika are siblings, and the only reason she has not leaked the info is because she does not really care about it

So anyone think Nonoa looks like Hayasaka from Kaguya-sama Love is War. I think there is a resemblance except Hayasaka is a little taller and bustier.

That is, in fact, partly why she's rising so quickly through my ranks. Hard not to like someone bearing a passing resemblance to my favorite from that series.

Seeing the Suou grandfather really puts into perspective how much his influence has shaped the siblings' lives, and not in a good way. When he's not forcing his expectations on his grandchildren and making them compete with each other he's casually insulting them. His own daughter looks absolutely miserable, especially being separated from her son and having utterly no influence on her childrens' lives because she cant go against her father. At least Yuki has some quality maid tiddies from Ayano to comfort herself.
Poor Alya. Everyone at school was more impressed by Masachika's performance during the debate to the point where he has to have one of his own friends throw her a bone so she can actually stand out a bit more.
What were Chisaki and Touya doing in a room, alone, that they felt they needed to hide when someone else came in? Their hair looked a little frazzled...
You almost have to admire how brazen and calculated Nonoa is to the point where the only relationship she truly values is with Sayacchi and she's willing to casually confess to a "crime" for her sake. Her relationships with men didn't mean anything but did she fall for the girl who tried to slap some self-respect into her?
Say Ayano's name and she will appear! With Yuki in tow!
Turns out half-Russian girls are really susceptible to hypnotism. And exposing their underwear.

I agree with the review that episode 9 was a but of a mixed bag, but that's more a part of the animators making some odd choices in the pacing. So far, through volume 5 of the English release, I feel like the books have done a better job of handling the balance of lighthearted and the serious.
Still, plenty of fun moments in this one, from Ayano popping up at Masachika's unintended command to the show remembering that we hadn't seen Alya in her underwear too much lately.
My one gripe with this episode is that they left out a very important moment during Masachika's conversation with Nonoa. After he points out that he spotted her "plants" in the debate audience, he then proceeds to name each one individually, causing Nonoa to remark (paraphrasing because I don't have the book in front of me) "You spotted them all in the dark auditorium from a brightly lit stage?"
The intention is to show just how observant and prepared Masachika can be. It's a peek into the secret badass he's been hiding this whole time from everyone. The real him that only his sister and Ayano know about. I'm sorry they cut that moment without replacing it with anything of equal characterization value.

It is funny you say that because since Nonoa and Masachika are so simmilar, they are one of the few where they can be themself, it has even been hinted at that Sayaka does not know of Nonoa's doing. Besides Yuki and to some extend Masha, Nonoa is the only one that can breakthrough Masashikas shell with ease, but in Nonoa case it is very much because they lead their guards down around each other since they both know that they are very much the same in many ways.
Now onto a detail i loved about this episode was to see Masachika And Yuki's mom, since in the LN they has ony been 2 non flashback scenes with the mom, and the first propper shot we got of her finally made me click why she acted the way she did towards Masachika. It is clear that from the 2 scene we have had with her is that she is a very timmed person, but with how dead she looked in the first shot made everything click So the next is in spoiler and is stuff that is most likely gonna be shown in the next 2 episodes So one of the big question that has not been answered in what i have read in LN (i am halfway through vol 5) is that why did his mom become so angry with him. The reason Masachika has learned so much is so that he could get praised from his mom, since he could always see that the praise she gaved him was with a fake smile, and what he yearned was a nomral praise from a parent he loved, Which resulted in her yelling at asking him to just stop. Now in the LN we have not gotten her side of things, but with how dead she looked i think it is very much clear. In some ways when ever Masachika does something perfect, she feels her control as a parent fadeing away and also he might resemble her cleary controlling father, and is scared of what he will turn into

Seeing Alya on the offensive and Masachika on the back foot was refreshing. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his pain next episode.

| Quote: | | I do have to address the big elephant in the room: the show is glossing over last week's hypnotism shenanigans. Ignoring that the hypnotism gag worked in a relatively grounded show with a lot of meta-humor, I am shocked that Alya didn't bring it up at all or that it wasn't at least talked about around her. |
So i was kinda shocked they did the Hypnosis bit at all, since it is a very rare bit of pure filler in the LN. i Remember reading it and thought "why is this here, it leads to nothing"

Wow, Alya who flirts and teases without Russian is the most powerful version of Alya. Masachika has utterly no idea how to handle her. Maybe she should stick with that!
All work and no big bro affection makes Yuki a dull girl!
I wonder if Touya and Chisaki being all over each other in the student council room is foreshadowing Alya and Masachika?
I love how when Masha gets mad all she can really do is be cute and have the most adorable pout. Totally worth seeing her in her undies for.
Ha ha, Masachika's grandpa is quite the character. I can imagine him and Yuki getting along amazingly. At least the siblings have one good grandpa. And a grandma who keeps him in line when he spends his pension frivolously.
Kikuko Inoue as the Kujo Sisters' mom? Sure, why not!
Ulp. Mom drama.
