I have looked this series up to find out what it is about but I would feel better getting answers from real people. So by retelling is it just the same thing minus all the fanservice or is it like Smallville where many things are changed? How much new stuff is there if any? Does anything major happen in this series, or is it just one of those manga to come out to try and cash in such as manga based on anime? Also since the manga came out after the anime started is it one of those series were there isnt much going on like many other manga that are released after the anime comes out.

Only the first few episodes could be considered a retelling of the first anime series, and even that is a bit of stretch. From there, it carves a unique story, one different from the first series and the manga, and has a more offbeat sense of humor than the previous version.
I really enjoyed it. |

First of all, Negima!? is a reinterpretation in the sense that despite the use of the same characters, story details and the personalities/plot details regarding said characters are vastly different from the manga.
More so here than in Negima! Because, BTW, this series seems lighter than the previous two. [/spoiler] |

So with this series even though the anime started before the manga would it be smart to start reading the manga first? Is it treated like the normal negima were the anime got ideas from the manga?

No, you don't need to look into the Negima!? Neo manga first, and you might even be better off just avoiding it entirely. You don't need to be familiar with the original Mahou Sensei Negima manga either to follow Negima!? Aside from the basic premise, character designs, and the vampire arc (in the remake the first two episodes), the remake takes its own path.
Negima!? is less interested in its plot than in bizarre artistic styling and general weirdness. Compare: Pani Poni Dash, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and (to a lesser extent) Moon Phase. |
