In the army, parts of the story deal with the Armed Forces, or any Branch specific themes?
Silent Service deals with a group of Submariners from the JMSDF (Tom Clancy-ish). 801 T.T.S. Airbats with the JASDF (Comedy). Patlabor: The Movie 2 has the JSDF attempt a politcal coup.
Can you be more specific?

I'm also interested in finding real life war anime, such as anime based on WWII.

You might find Grave of the Fireflies interesting, since it occurs during the firebombing of Japan in WWII

I heard Barefoot Gen is something like Grave of the Fireflies... a family's struggle during the bombing of Hiroshima.

There's also a great movie, if you can track it down, called Who's Left Behind? It's also a great WWII film, along the lines of Barefoot Gen and GotF.

Last EXILE is a little military-ish. There are a few scenes near the beginning with musketeers, vanship dogfights, and battleship-type combat, but they stray from it after about 6 or 7 episodes, I think, it could be less. It's probably not something you'd like enough to call "army" though, since a majority of the series is science fiction.

can't think of any anime that hasn't been mentioned, but you might try the Manga Cat Shit One (aka: Apocalypse Meow).
While animals are the characters (Rabbits for US troops, Monkeys for Japanese, Panda for Chinese, etc) it's pretty accurate in historical terms.
But Grave of the Fireflies is a favourite among the anime.

I didn't really like Grave of the Fireflies. maybe it was the lack of action, though, or maybe figuring out that the 2 kids and both their parents die sorta killed the drama for me.
am I the only one who feels this way?

Oh, I also forgot to mention Jin-Roh. It's more of a special ops. kind of deal where you have one guy as the main focus with a bunch of conspiracy between the government, the military, and rebel factions, but I like it. It's very dark and very slow, so don't say I didn't warn you. If you like slow movies though, try it out.

It is really hard to think of war type animes without any mechs in them like gundam . I do think it would be cool if they did make more real life war animes though.
Jin-Roh and gotf are both extremely good movies and i highly reccommend them. If your watching gotf i also reccommend a box of tissues .

Jin-Roh is a great movie - in fact, it was the first movie that came to my head when reading this thread. Unfortunately, the movie is more about Fuse's internal struggle. The military type stuff is not too prevelant.
The Gundam series' are based on a future military, and all (except G) are very good. Lots of war and political themes running, and showing different sides of war. An excellent choice in my opinion, but pretty different from SPR.
Neon Genesis Evangelion has guest appearances by the UN Defense Force, but the story mainly revolves around 3 children made to pilot giant robots, and their inner turmoil. An Anime classic, but maybe not what you're looking for.
Dai Guard is a funny show about a civilian defense force working with the military to save the world. Not really on the dramatic scale of SPR, though.
After WWII, the rest of the world wasn't too hot on Japan having a big military force. Also, keep in mind that Japan's efforts in WWII were focused on the Pacific Theater. I'm no history professor, but I can guess that it'd be vastly different than the European invasion portraid in SPR. That being said, Anime does offer a lot of police/defense force type shows.
Somebody mentioned Patlabor - I've never seen the series', but both of the first 2 movies are excellent. Mobile Police in big robots can't be beat.
Ghost in the Shell would fit into this category also, but there are 2 flavors - the movies are much more sci-fi, and the TV show is much more police-type. The Section 9 crew is awesome, though.

The Cockpit is really the only anime I know of available in English that really shows actual WWII-era combat (Grave of the Fireflies/Barefoot Gen/Rail of the Star all deal with the impact of the war on civilians)
If you're willing to suspend some disbelief and see mechs/powersuits simply as the next evolution of armor/MBT's, Gasaraki, especially the first few episodes, before it veers off into mysticism/SF, should be exactly what you're looking for.
