awman, I can't agree with you more on Spice & Wolf.
I mean, there are moments of enjoyable chemistry between the leads, but you're absolutely right, it's medieval economics and crazy boring.. watching Horo haggle with merchants actually made me ask myself "why am I watching this?". I didn't watch the second season, and I'll never understand why people like it :\ wait, I don't think I'd consider Horo tsundere.. She's much more Ojou-sama <.<. iirc, she dones't have that "i-i-i-i'm not doing this because I like you! *blush*" attitude that most modern "tsunderes" have. yeah, I only got through it to see the ending.. and I was very let down to find it doesn't actually end with them arriving at her forest or whatever in the north. <.< but uh.. the few times she goes giga-wolf is pretty cool :\ regarding the "anime is better than western stuff" thing, I think to ask that you really gotta define what exactly constitutes an "anime". I know pretty much everyone'll just say "duh, a cartoon from japan" or "animated in japan" or something. but I think there's much more to it than that. But, as you guys said, the point really is TV anime is better than western TV. And though for the most part I agree, most of the western stuff is comedy. So do you just write that all off as garbage? "ehh it doesn't have a plot. yeah my sides hurt from laughing, so it's clearly performing what it was meant to correctly, but there isn't character development". that just seems silly. Plus how are the comic book cartoon shows any different character and plot-wise to your generic anime? especially all your ecchi garbage shows these days... of course just talking straight animation, I'd agree most generic anime looks better than your average ep of Billy & Mandy, or (what's that new one?) Total Drama Island. of course, one show I'm anticipating more than half the anime coming out next year, is the Adventure Time series. I never really got the sense that I was being pandered to in Spice and Wolf... To be honest, the relationship progression reminded me a lot more of a shojo series than your typical moe fare. I really enjoyed the romantic tension throughout the show, too. I thought they handled that very well.
The economic stuff really was strangely compelling in and of itself. I remember feeling almost sucker-punched when spoiler[Lawrence found out that the armor he'd invested in was worthless.] Which is weird, because I'm definitely not an economics kind of girl, overall. Numbers tend to make my head spin. Er, not to reinforce the idea that girls suck at math or anything. Economics has just seemed really boring to me. Which is why it's so fascinating to me that I was so completely drawn in by this show. Who'da thunk? So, yeah. I really got into Spice and Wolf. I had to watch the second season immediately following the first. I'm afraid I couldn't explain exactly why, though. Edutainment done right, perhaps? The characters were very likable. I wouldn't mind bumming around with Lawrence and Holo... |

I don't think they were trolling at all. I think they were genuinely trying to figure the show out. Different things appeal to different people and it's fun to try and figure out why.

Tsundere's are sort of bitches by definition. I'm not defending them by any means, and I actually hate that character type, but there is obviously a fairly large contingent of people (especially in Japan) that eat it up. I have absolutely no idea why, but I guess it plays into some sort of Japanese male (Otaku) fantasy of a relationship where they have none of the responsibility, and where the female half wears the pants.
Oh, and on the Blu-Ray front, I'd say that any show that was created by a studio that had some decent artists (and a budget) will benefit from being brought over to Blu-Ray. The best examples of this that I can think of right now are Zeta Gundam and Yu Yu Hakusho. Both look fairly awful on DVD (both of which I own in their entirety), but they look incredible on Blu-Ray. Yu Yu Hakusho in particular is like an entirely different show, with a different color scheme even (I compared my DVD's to a friends imported Blu-Ray set, and the colors are definitely different). Needless to say, anything that was a theatrical production in Japan will definitely benefit from Blu-Ray as well. I saw a single frame of Galaxy Express 999 (the movie version I believe) on Blu-Ray a while ago, and I fell in love with the art work. I know that we'll never get that in the United States, but it is amazing how much detail was there in the cells that comprised the early animation releases. Love the show guys. Thanks. Edit: I forgot to add my own mind blowing story related to a reason that someone told me they didn't buy an anime. On IRC a couple of years ago, in a channel I've frequented for many years, a friend of mine told me that he didn't buy an anime (if only I could remember which one) because the DVD subtitles were higher on the frame than he'd have liked. That may sound like a semi-reasonable thing, but this particular friend had a religious fervor about only watching dubs. In other words, he wasn't going to purchase a DVD because a feature he would -never- use wasn't to his liking. It's worth pointing out that this person had no problem pirating the same release (not a fansub, but the actual NTSC region DVD rips from a rip group). People generally just don't want to spend money, especially in this recession, and especially on anime (which has been devalued so highly by the general opinion of younger fans on forums and in schools). Well, you're right about one thing, Holo is in part of the "dere" trait; she's someone of a "kuudere" person (I had to look it up since surprisingly enough, this the first I came across this term).

Everyone loves it because Horo is teasing, but not a bitch or tsundere. But I repeat myself. Neither is she a doormat. Anyway, I think the reason people like it is the same reason why people like Aria or other shows where not a lot happens. It's nice to just have a nice show that doesn't do a lot, makes you just kinda relax. I also have to wonder what it's like to this anime all in a row, like Zac probably did, versus having an episode a week like a lot of us did back two years ago. I think the way in which you space the episodes might have a lot to do with you how feel about a show. Some shows are better marathoned, some not. |

I cannot for the life of me find any interest in the premise of Spice and Wolf. It's not the type of show I would be interested in. But hey, if there are mahjong anime and baking anime, why not economics? There's even a bacteria anime. I want to see an anime about DVD packaging, with folks arguing about thinpacks for thirteen episodes.
Justin, your laugh sounds a little fake sometimes. I haven't seen Ponyo yet, but I also don't find myself really looking forward to it. I was excited about seeing Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, but Ponyo can wait for me. In fact, I haven't seen any animated movies this year. None of them seemed that interesting. I heard good things about Up, though. You think Alita is more likely to crossover than Cowboy Bebop, which was a show steeped in American movie references? I hope that movie never comes to light, though, because the thought of Keanu Reeves as Spike makes me want to vomit. Don't tease depress me with Legend of the Galactic Heroes' lack of R1 license. I know it'll never happen. It's too bad. It really is an extraordinary anime. "Bust on" hentai? I hear what you did there. In find Mania to be a very difficult to navigate website, and generally sort of off-putting. I'm glad the AnimeOnDVD forums are still the same, but most of the reviews and the like are just deplorable. AnimeOnDVD.com was once my second favorite anime website, after ANN. Now I'd rather be on 4chan than Mania. Still haven't gone to Blu-Ray. Can't afford it, not enough anime on it. For now, it can wait. |

...and no, I haven't seen it yet (so I'm doing my best not to read people's spoilers). Chris Beveridge was the first reviewer I read when I started getting into anime. While I enjoy his "even-handed" reviews, I quit going to the AoDVD forums a long time ago. I quickly learned that my tastes didn't really mesh with the forum regulars. I actually have found that I make better purchases when I read more than one review of a title, even the negative ones help me make more informed decisions. re: Adult titles: I noticed when I last visited RightStuf and looked at the recent Adult best seller list; All the DVD titles listed geared toward men, and all the manga titles were yaoi. -some things don't change all that much, ... but I still wonder why that is...Do women prefer their porn in print form? Do men prefer DVDs as opposed to print? Why not the other way around??

Some would argue that society and social mores teach women to be ashamed of sexual indulgence, moreso than men. There's an additional stigma there, as women are considered to be the "purer" sex. Books are both cheaper and more discreet, so there might be an attraction there. I think it also has a lot to do with the Japanese anime market, too. There are simply less yaoi OVAs being produced in comparison to hentai. They produce according to the demand over there, not here. But I'd imagine both have declined recently... That being said, this fangirl is certainly looking forward to the upcoming 13-episode Ai no Kusabi remake. So there. I'll take my "porn" where I can get it. Er, can't speak for men, but I have noticed that there's really not much to speak of in the way of hentai manga. I think RightStuf had a sale a month or so ago, but other than that... Yeah, very much below the radar. I'll be curious to hear the male perspective on that. |
