I was wondering why I see so many anime characters that have a vampire tooth/snaggletooth. I can understand showing them when a character is absolutely furious. But showing an eye-tooth so much when the character is seemingly in a "normal" situation makes me pause to wonder why.
Is it because the character in question has a slighty evil side to them, e.g. Lina Inverse from "Slayers." I have seen this in a few anime, but I have been going through the "Slayers" DVDs so Lina stands out to me just now.
Or is this just a common dental condition in Japan? Like buckteeth and gapteeth are here in the US.
Thanks for your help!

I'm not really sure what it is. Fuu has it in Samurai Champloo. Tina has it in Aoi Yori Aoshi. Kuriko has it in Maburaho.
I think what it is, in the case of Kuriko and Tina, its because they are blonde and sexually aggressive. Perhaps that tooth is representative of that predatorial side of them?

The theory I have most often heard voiced on this is that it's actually a cat fang and is meant to imply catty behavior or catlike characteristics.

I've personally always taken it to mean the character has a michievous or otherwise aggressive nature. Just look at Lina, for example, or that really gung-ho female lead from Comic Party...the redheaded doujin artist whose name I can't recall for the life of me. Or in a similar vein, Genshiken's resident militant otaku, Madarame.
I've also seen some people depict Arcueid from Tsukihime with that same fang, which works both for her personality and for her vampiric nature.

I subscribe to this theory as well! Excel from Excel Saga has one also.

And even more proof to this would be Edward from Cowboy Bebop. I know she's had the little snaggletooth at least once and she's the most cat like none catgirl character I've seen.

So if it's a cat fang, could it be similar to the cat ears thing, innocence? An innocent devil? I am pretty sure edward, Lina, and probably Fuu are all "innocent" in the biblical sense. But they all do things to get their way at the inconvenience of others, the devil in them.
It seems we have eliminated the bad teeth theory. Well, it worked for Austin Powers.

The cat features denote mischievious, sly and/or perverted behavior. Miroku would be depicted with it half the time if this convention was used in Inuyasha, for example.
