I have been looking at this for some time now and I can't decide if I want fork over the money again for it. It is supposed to have a new english dub, which obviously the older one needed a new one. But I don't want to get it and then find out it sucks too. I was just wondering if anyone has this version and there thoughts. Like I said before I have thinking about getting for some time, but I always find my self on the line, and don't get it. Thanks for any help.

I know what your saying. I still would rather watch my old dub VHS. Because I like the english Dialog better than the DVD. The new dialoge completely chaneged the mood I some of my favorite parts. Sorry I haven't seen the special edition one though.

I just bought this on sale from Right-Stuf and am not sure if it's the one you are mentioning. Mine came with a CD and has "new Japanese 5.1 dts version" on it. It also mentions being the Digitally Restored Picture (2001 version). At any rate, I enjoyed the dub, but I have no other version to refrence it with.

I think Dargonxtc is referring to the 2, or is it 3, disc special edition that comes in a "sexy" case. The one from RighStuf is the original DVD release with 5.1 Japanese added... I think thats all that was added but maybe the new dub was used on this release... and also comes with the soundtrack.

I own the one that comes in a tin and has some of that alternate angle features, which I never really explored. This is one of those titles that I am sure will always be rereleased as new video formats become available. I've thought about buying the other version (DTS) but am holding off for a HD version.

I recommend the 6 volume (400+ page each) manga as a better alternative. Craming that much material into a 2 hour anime doesn't do Katsuhiro Otomo's classic series justice. Cool

If you've read the manga, you will hate the anime because you feel that this is what the anime should have been.

I agree with darkhunter, the anime maybe good if and only if you diden't read the graphic novel. any way if you want to know if new dub is good or not I'd say no. all the releases are bacially the same, you would not be missing much exept a tin case and special features.

If you want to have both the original dub and the new one, get this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00009MGHU/qid=1148398361/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/202-8748426-8957425

Its a double disc set which has the New dub and the original Japanese and on disc two, the original dub as well as a making of.

The set costs £9 so about $17.

Well I was reffering to this one. Just read the first line, so if that you havce heard it thats what I am talking about.

MIBlackburn_d6, Amazon doesn't say whether it has been re-dubbed, only a customer review does. And even then it does not say whether it was the English or Japanese dub. I am betting it is the Japanese dub, purely out of my extreme distrust of Amazon. Not your fault.

The 2-disc Special Edition you're looking at contains the new English dub and the original Japanese track in Dolby Digital 5.1. I thought this one was supposed to have Japanese 5.1 as well, but maybe not.

In any case, -gecko- is referring to this one. It's a single disc feature that contains a Japanese DTS track, an English DD 5.1 of the new dub, and the soundtrack in a seperate case (very good listen, by the way). And it's only $9.99 Shocked.

If audio is your thing, go for the DTS release. If you want extras, then go for either the Special Edition or the harder-to-find Limited Edition tin.

Thanks Tony, yes I would rather have better sound in the movie than extras. Thanks for the help.

The old dub was horrible. They trampled all over the translation and wrote dialogue that didn't fit the charicters. The new Dub is much closer to the subs if you watch it that way. I found the new dub is much more true to the original Japanese. I do miss some of the quirky lines from the old Streamline dub though. "Just when my coils were hitting the green line!" LMAO.

I remember hearing "Damn, My Motor Coils Were Just Getting Warms Up"... Rolling Eyes I had to put subtitles to understand it.

I didn't know there was a Special Edition, I thought the Tin was the only Special Edition around. So there are 5 releases of Akira, excluding the VHS... Eva type milking right there.

Thanks Tony K. and Dargonxtc. I should be glad that my version has the new dub. I thought it was fantastic! I especially enjoyed the voices behind the three "kids".

I only count three: Streamline's dub on VHS, Pioneer's original version (released as a special edition with one bonus disc or a regular version), and then Geneon's new 5.1 mix of the original Japanese dialogue.
