So which anime company do you think does the best animation and tell me why do you think that this company does the best animation
I think Gonzo Digimation does the best animation
MY reason behind this is because of the anime series Last exile. All the animation in this series s so beutifally done, IT is so fluent and easy on the eyes.
ANd they 3d battle scenes are awrsome,
The air battleships and their cannons when they fire are exccelent

I haven't seen Last Exile yet (I have a REALLY long list of shows to see ), but I can tell you for sure that RIGHT NOW, their animation is pretty terrible. Just look at 'NHK ni Youkosou!' or anything else they've done recently that I can think of.
For a TV show it's got to be KyoAni. Haruhi was just.... too awesome. The amount of effort and detail they put in to the little things just went SOOooo far to up the immersiveness of the show (that's totally not a word ).
If you include movies though? I don't know how movies are produced, if it's by a studio per-say or just a gathering of talented individuals, but WITHOUT A DOUBT IN MY MIND, best animation goes to whatever group is doing '5cm'. I almost had to change my pants when I saw that trailer. I'd almost put money that they were the same people who did 'Beyond the Clouds' (which would probably number two on my list).

I'll have to agree with Psycho Sting on this one. I think Gonzo is one of the better animation studios out there. The reason is because practically all of my favorite anime series that have come out this year have been made by Gonzo. And as for Selenta's comment | Quote: | | I can tell you for sure that RIGHT NOW, their animation is pretty terrible. Either I must have very poor vision but Gonzo's recent anime titles like Last Exile, Gankutsuo, Samurai 7, Gantz (especially Gankutsuo), have some of the best animation out there so far.

If we're ingoring all plot/story and focusing purely on visual, then yes, Gonzo is the best studio out there. Their work is surprisingly, even ridculously high quality, clear, and crisp.
Honestly tho', I can't decide if that's a good thing or not. A lot of recent anime I've seen has been visually perfect, not a flaw to be seen... but it's made me a little uncomfortable. It's TOO good, to the point of being sterile and boring. My recent purchases of old VHS anime have emphasized this change... the video on those old 80s productions is full of flaws, but I've enjoyed watching it a lot more- it somehow seems more expressive. Maybe I just haven't seen a really good anime lately (I'm mentally comparing the first episodes of Fate/Stay Night and Leda: Fantastic Adventures of Yohko, both of which are pretty average anime overall.)

There is definitely something to be said for a good handdrawn animation. "Sterile" is a good word for computer animation - it looks great but the uniqueness and integrity of the animation feels somewhat sacrificed.

I'm going to have to agree with selenta in that I can't agree with the GONZO responses.
It seems for every show they have that is really good looking, there's another that looks like ass. I can't consider that consistant enough to say they have the best animation.
Consistancy for television anime? Kyoto Animation has shown me a lot over the past year and a half, but I've always liked the feel and style of J.C. Staff series, which I can usually expect a certain level of animation and visual quality, so I'm going to say they're my pick.
For movies, Makoto Shinkai (does he even have a studio name?) is my pick. I can't get enough of Makoto Shinkai's style, and I'm amazed at how much better one of his films seems whenever he unveils a new one.

GONZO used to be known for their quality animation, but in the past few years they've gone downhill in animation. They haven't been to hot in the story department for years (which an exception or two), but that's another issue.
After watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, I think you'd be hard pressed to find better animation quality in a TV series. Not only in the action scenes, but in the non-action stuff as well. And then there is the attention to detail. Watch episodes 10 and 12 (Melancholy IV and Live Alive) to see why Kyoto Animation is my favorite and, in my opinion, the best at this point in time.

For me, Studio 4°C is the only choice. This studio has been releasing consistantly high-quality work for years, but often goes unnoticed because of the obscurity of many of their titles, and the eccentricity of the rest. From Arete Hime to Comedy to Memories to Mind Game, the studio has always focused on refined and highly creative character animation, as well as experimentation of style and technique. As a result, their titles always feel fresh and energetic, and look gorgeous. From the looks of the Tekkon Kinkurito trailer, it may be the best-looking anime feature to come out next year.

I consider the peeps of Studio 4°C to be very bold and pretty daring when they try out new animation techniques (the movie Mindgame I considered to be an extreme example). Aesthetically, however, they're not really appealing. Though I have enjoyed their TV series Tweeny Witches especially the DVD versions, and I loved that music video they made for one of Ayumi Hamazaki's songs.
But in all in terms of TV series, Kyoto Animation hands down is the best based on what others said. And besides, these guys were able to animated TV series that both satifies fans of the original sources and newcomers. I have to say these guys must really love animating the series they do since they put so much detail in everything they do.

I'd usually Go with Gonzo. Cause their work on Transformers Cybertron was awesome(Infact my Avatar is made by them).
But with all those years of watching Digimon and Dragonball/Z/GT Not to mention old Transformers Episodes(G1 Episodes) I'd have to go with Toei Animation...

I think that's very subjective, depending on the viewer. It's like saying the artwork in The Triplets of Belleville is unappealing because of its stylization. You're of course entitled to your own opinion, but for someone like me, the art of Mind Game or Noiseman is MUCH more appealing than the artwork of Haruhi, although they both have great animation quality. Like I said, it's all subjective.

What the? Did everyone just forget about Madhouse all of a sudden? Sure, Trigun was iffy, but everything else I've seen has been up to their normal standards of near flawless integration of both vibrant artwork and animation. Haven't seen any of their recent products past Tenjou Tenge yet, but I've seen very few productions of theirs that have left me dissatisfied.

Hahaha, if you've seen Strawberry Panic, you'll noticed the production values of that series is really average in their standards. I'm guessing they mostly concentrated their budget on heavy-hitter series like Black Lagoon (which is seriously the most hardcore, action-packed girls-with-guns series I've seen) and Nana which is consistantly looking good considering it's going to be a 50 episode series.

Each animation studio has its own merits and glories. It's difficult to compare most of them, for few could provide us outstandingly memorable moments. I'd like to try categorizing them first:
Old soldiers never die: Toei, Pierrot, Madhouse, Mushi Productions, Ashi Productions, TMS, AIC, Tatsunoko.
These are veteran studios. Each of them has a long list of titles, and many of them are timeless classics. While none of them are particularly good at newer 3D CGI animation, their solid 2D skills had formed the concept of anime in our minds. Although not as prominent as the old days, most of them still soldier on, and most of their modern products are still way above average.
New kids on the block: Production I.G, J.C. Staff, Aniplex, BONES, Fantasia, Satelight, Doumu, DEEN, Shaft, Xebec.
These are newer studios skilled with 3D CGI, and their 2D cels are often also colored with computers, thus the sharp and vibrant image output. However, while most of them maintain their high quality throughout the entire series (in cases of long TV titles), some of them can't keep up the quality assurance, and sakuga houkai (作画崩壊, deteriorating animation) can occur. A recent notorious example was Negima TV.
Special achievements: Studio Ghibli, CoMix Wave
These are studios surrounding one person: Hayao Miyazaki for Ghibli, and Makoto Shinkai for CoMix Wave. They don't produce TV or multi-episode OAV, but their movies are simply awesome, thanks to talents of their respective leaders.
Best Visual Effects: GONZO
Now for the main dish. As many posts have mentioned, GONZO is arguably the best studio at visual effects, particularly on 3D CGI. Their Blue Submarine No.6, Last Exile, and Gankutsuou are jaw-dropping; I can never forget the moment when I saw Count's space ship and Haydée's evening gown. I dropped my jaw -- literally. However, GONZO is also notorious for inconsistent animation quality throughout the series: just compare Haydée's evening gown in ep6 and ep7.
Best Artistic Creativity: Studio 4°C
*Ahem* You can stop clapping, Miss C.
Studio 4°C is very adventurous and daring. Instead of your typical big round eyes, their character designer team often create new methods of animating their weird-looking characters. I have to agree with darkchibi to some degree; their un-mainstream designs and animating methods can be an unwelcome factor for financial success. Yet, their products storm your brain -- you never know what will be the next. They are the most artist and least entertainer studio in the crowd.
Best Overall: Kyoto Animation
The cream of the crop. What I admire KyoAni is its care to the smallest details: the blurry surface of eyes, the flowing blonde ponytail in the wind, the autofocusing home video camera, the dents on drums, the campus building drawn in 3D model but skillfully disguised as traditional watercolor background, the dissipating steam over a hot cup of tea, etc., etc. Only those with the sharpest eyes can notice them in real life, turn them into anime, and then transfer those messages to those otaku who have similar eyesights, forming virtual bonds between animators and audiences.
Sadly, KyoAni is not perfect. I've noticed a particular Achilles' heel of theirs: characters walking directly towards or away from the camera. I can remember two shots clearly in SHnY, and I've double checked Air. Naturally, when the camera is fixed, a character should become bigger when walking near and smaller when walking away. Yet, when Haruhi walking directly towards or away from the camra her size never changes, as if she has learned "walking on the moon" from Michael Jackson. Wish they could solve this problem in the future, namely Kanon remake.
