I just got my dvd in the mail and while the box and the card are good, the dvd itself just looks weird. I mean, there's no print on it, just text and that's making me think that something may be wrong here. Is there anyone that can tell me what the first dvd is supposed to look like?

If no one helps you before this evening I can post a picture of mine tonight. I am currently visiting family for Thanksgiving but I will be back home this evening (EST USA).

Did you buy the complete series collection, or the singles? (and then the part 2 and 3) I have the singles, so if it's that, then I can take a look. If you have the series collection, then I can't help you there since I don't know what those are supposed to look like.

It's the first single so if one of you guys could have a look I would really appreciate it! I'm really hoping that it turns out to be legit.

I am just basing this off of memory, but I thought that the design of the DVD was the same as the reverse of the cover. Pink reverse cover --> pink DVD design.

if you are looking for this one* and want to confirm what it looks like,

I have the 9 disc set. It's in a rather thin/flimsy box with 5 thinpak cases.
On the front cover it reads "The Story of Saiunkoku, The Complete Season One, 39 Episodes on 9 discs"

Front of the box

Artwork for the thinpak dvd case of Volume 1 & 2

Volume 1 and 2

*Both the Amzn US and ANN listings have the total run time in minutes at 936, but on the bottom of the box it notes it as 975. I have yet to finish watching this show so I couldn't tell you which of those is correct...

I wish I had that one! Wink The dvds probably look the same for whichever version you buy. That's what first had me worried, because that dvd looked nothing like the ones that were in S1 part 2 and 3 sets.

Good to see that you got your refund. I only have that one set otherwise I would be happy to make a trade.

I've since checked a few of the recent Amzn listings, those prices are just whack. Especially the UK ones. Hope you're able to find one that's legitimate for a reasonable price.

Wait. Why are you buying the singles if the singles were never finished?

Well, other than taking up more space, it's not like you're stuck with an incomplete series. You'd just have to buy the first 3 singles, then the part 2 and part 3 collections. Of course, if the option for the complete collection had existed when I was buying them, I likely would have gone that route.

I also bought the singles plus the part 2 and part 3 releases. I then bought multiple-disk cases that are the size of normal DVD cases and split the DVDs amongst them. I use the cover art from the three singles for those cases and keep them in the box that came with one of the singles. So all 9 disks are in the singles packaging.

I managed to get new part 2 and 3 sets at a pretty good price and if you have those, all you need are three singles and then you're done. It's not impossible to get the complete first series. I'd have probably bought the complete set if the prices weren't so insane.

It's very unlikely that anyone is selling brand-new legitimate versions of Saiunkoku. Funimation sold Geneon's release as part of their distribution deal after Geneon USA closed up shop. That relationship ended, and no one other than private parties is distributing legal copies of the R1 release any longer. (That's why the prices on Amazon are so ridiculous.) I'm sure you can buy legitimate used copies of this show at a reasonable price, but any supposedly new copies are pretty likely to be counterfeits.
