At my school a lot of the otaku are also big huge gamers and i see at cons some of them are gemu otaku(gamers) and anime otaku.
Is this the case with the majority of anime fans?

I can't really say for sure but I'm certain a good amount are since gameing, anime, and for that matter manga all go hand in hand. Usally one opens the door to the other, I started as a gamer and now I like anime which also has compelled me to read manga every now and then.

I'm a casual gamer. I play The Big Ones like Kingdom Hearts, Guilty Gear, and Dance Dance Revolution that every person who considers themselves a gamer is supposed to play (well, I still haven't played FF7 yet), but I'm mostly just into anime and manga. I haven’t really given it much thought before, but I've yet to meet a single anime fan that doesn't play at least a handful of games or an MMORPG or two as well. Interesting…

I've been a gamer before I even knew about anime. I still watch a good handful of anime, but more of my free time goes toward City of Heroes/Villians and what ever new game I got.
I have Tetris DS and play once it WiFi once and awhile, but I get my butt handed to me once and awhile.

To be honest, it's pretty hard to find young people who don't consider themselves at least an occasional gamer. Although I was a really hardcore gamer for a long time, I've mostly stopped playing games for the most part. Though I occasionally get get back into some older games like FF, Sims 2, Warcraft III etc.
So basically... since gamers are a pretty large minority among young'uns, finding an anime fan who doesn't like video games would be quite wierd in my opinion.
However, this is not really the truth with older fans, and I would definitely say that a number of older anime fans are not gamers, though probably more than average are.

I played games long before I could even actually differentiate anime from from standard North American animation. I started gaming back in '96 or '97 and didn't start watching anime till about '04-'05. I do them entirely independantly of each other though. I don't combine them both into one form of culture or type of activity. Anime is anime and gaming is gaming. It's not; anime and gaming is being an otaku. Society still places a certain amount of stigma on watching anime but gaming has become mainstream to the point that you pretty much can't call yourself a gamer in some form for the majority of people (at least, people under about 30 or thereabouts I suppose). The gaming demographic has changed considerably since it's revival in the 80's. On the other hand, anime already (and has always) appealed to pretty much any type of person imaginable and it's merely the integration into our society that remains an obstacle.
Personally I'm quite big on both but I could live with one over the other but I don't really know if I could really choose one over the other (right now it'd probably be anime but when I want to play games I want to play games).

Yeh same here, i was a gamer before i knew about anime aswell. I remember getting my first Playstation in around 1994/5 and my 1st game was Crash Bandicoot. I was addicited, This is when my life as a gamer began. I started to collect all the Crash bandicoot games. I then bought my self a Gameboy light during 1996-8 and this is where my Pokemon Craze Began. I bought BLUE version (cause it was my fav colour),then i bought RED version, and finally YELLOW version when it came out. By about yr 2000, i had about 40 games on My P.S. The best games which i have to give a mention are FF7, FF8, Tekken3 and Metal Gear Solid.
As the Years progessed, i bought my self a Gameboy advanced during 2001-2 and started to the other versions of pokemon; Silver Gold and Crystal(Even the pokemon trading card game). In 2003, i bought my self a PS2 and my first game was FFX. As my game collection for the PS2 progressed, the games that deserve a special mention are FFX, X-2, Tekken 5, MGS2: Substance, MGS 3: Snake eater, KH1 and 2. I Now have about 40 PS2 games.
Also In yr 2002, This is where i began to watch ANIME/MANGA(My 1st anime was Naruto, But technically it was either DBZ, Ranma 1/2 or Sailor moon which i watched back in 1994 but that was before i knew it was anime.)
Also, i won a Game Boy SP( The one that flips) from a competition at the movies.
In the year 2003, My mum and her friend Opened up a Internet cafe. This is were i began to play games like Counter-strike, Warcraft and Starcraft. I currently still play CS: Source and Battlefield 2. Back then, i got to play alot of Cs and WC3 because i could play for free but now, i dont play as much, actually, i hardly play at my mum's internet cafe or any Internet cafe. Instead, i play at home. At home i have about 3 comps and 3 laptops so when ever my friends come over and were bored after playing basketball or soccer, we can play CS/WC3:D
In the year 2004/5 I finally got my hands on a PSP and i have around 10 games. When i went to Hk last year(2005) i Bought my self another PS2(chipped) So i could play my Import/anime games. I have about 15 Imported anime games. The ones that deserve a special mention are Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3, MS Gundam: Zaft Vs Omni and Intial D: Special Stage.
Currently, im saving up for a PS3, however the games that i have in mind that i need to get are MGS3: Subsistance and FFXII.
Im not really a big Otaku, but rather, a Big gamer.
Even though im a big gamer, doesnt mean i got no life
Im pretty active and social. I play alot of sports including Basketball, tennis, Soccer, NRL, Cricket and Kendo.

Used to be that gaming and otaku went hand in hand because they were all under that great geek subset.
Of course, in those days, it meant you were a high-score holder/tourney champ in at least one arcade, knew what THACO was, and probably carried a D20 and miniatures just in case.
It meant Warhammer, Battletech, and about a ton of pewter. It meant three different colors of Magic decks, and probably a BESM storyline or two.
The console revolution may mean that cracking Wave 27 in Galaga without twin-shipping doesn't mean as much amongst otaku as it used to, but trust me, gaming is as much a part of our geek culture as anime, building models, collecting figures, and a ton of other great hobbies.
Man, things seem so much less diverse now.

Of the people I know who watch a lot of anime, I'm the only person from the group that plays games more than watching anime or read manga. I play RPGs all the time for the PS2 (I'm not into using handhelds because I think they're a waste of money and the other systems don't really have good RPGs, except for Gamecube, only played ONE RPG that I like and that was Tales of Symphonia. Xbox has no good RPGs at all.) I've played Xenosaga 1-3, Grandia 3, .Hack (all 4 originals, though I only own number 1 :'( can't find the other 3) The FF series; all the ones that came to NA anyway. A friend of mine told me to play Kingdom Hearts, and I damn near burned the disc because of the horribleness of that game, what was Square-Enix thinking?

Depends a bit on what you define as a "gamer."
The people I associate with consider "gamers" to be enthusiasts of RPGs, board games, miniature games, and/or CCGs, and the two live-action movies out there titled "Gamers" (they're totally unrelated) focus on RPG enthusiasts. Granted, most such people also play (or once played) video games and MMORPGs heavily; I can remember blowing several dollars on a single arcade play session of Gauntlet in my youth or spending all night mastering the original Mortal Kombat on my friend's Nintendo, for instance. But many people I know wouldn't consider someone who only plays video games to be a true "gamer." To each his own, I guess. . .
Out of that crowd there's a much higher percentage of anime/manga enthusiasts than in the normal population. (One fantasy RPG character I sometimes play at conventions is a sorceress named Ihrie with a mouse familiar named Fam, and occasionally I run into fellow gamers who get the anime reference.) They're still a minority, but a sizable one.
As for going the other way? I'd be a bit surprised if more than a small percentage of American otaku are gamers in the sense I'm talking about. The percentage of otaku who are active video gamers is doubtless much, much higher, but hardly universal.

I don't know Key, CCGs are pretty darn big, Magic has how many players? Something like 6 million? Or is it 10 and the 6 million are just in the US? That's pretty darn big, but you're right that it's definitely smaller than the number of video game players. Still, at least among the young generation, "gamer" has no such association with board games or D&D; at least in my experience, it most commonly refers to video game players, though I guess anyone who plays any games would count as a secondary definition.

Key, I fit squarely into that group. My game group was probably one of the most active and the largest in Parma, Ohio (the infamous Parma Crew) and some of our all night sessions were Risk or Mille Bourne nights!
The Thursday before we truck up to Anime North in Toronto is a classic example. We hit the arcades, then head back to the base house to watch sci-fi and anime DVD's, play fighting or shooters on Xbox (or now 360), swap manga around, play some Shadowrun or Battletech or D&D (2nd edition advanced) or BESM (I own the Tenchi Muyo BESM sourcebook), and on and on.
Gaming is competitive structured play, whether board, pencil & paper, or video. You can't limit yourself to video games because they do eliminate a lot of the challenge and freedom given by tabletop gaming.

Ehhh, I used to love videogames... But I'm an example of when anime and videogame fandom do not go hand in hand. I just don't have the patience or motivation to play through something to find out the story. Most especially RPG games, which are far too time-consuming and repetitive for my tastes.
