I have to admit, when I read "Opposite of Marnie", I imagined a quiet, seaside-set romance of two young boys with a supernatural twist, and thought of the Boku no Pico trilogy, which has all of those elements across it.
I haven't read either novel, so I can't say if the quality of the sources has anything to do with it, but I much preferred Marnie to Arrietty. I'd be interested to see Yonebayashi's next film, Ghibli or no.

The film wasn't yuri. Marnie was Anna's GRANDMOTHER who came to her in spirit.

I'm wondering if Yonebayashi will be the new guy to helm the start of different types of films from Ghibli. I've been hearing from festivals and articles that after Marnie was screened at the NYICFF that this was going to be the last Ghibli film for awhile. But who know what they are going to come up with to fill the gap.
