Hitori no Shita: The Outcast

Genres: horror
Themes: zombies

Plot Summary: Chou Soran leads a very common college student's life until he finds himself caught up in a terrible incident that happened in a small village. As he was walking through a graveyard, he is assaulted by zombies. Thinking that it was over for him, a mysterious girl carrying a sword suddenly saves him and disappears.

Episode 1:

Hmm, I think the first episode was rather strange. I think it was aiming at mystery and horror with the zombie themes but what I got is more of the action with a semi-thrilling feel. The main girl is the badass while the guy feels more like he's standing on the sidelines.

The story feels kinda boring though, I hope it expands on its ideas more beyond just the zombie fighting.

Episode 1

Well so far is a case that I can point out many things wrong. The music feels like a poor fit, the OP especially where the style can be a bit hard to match other art but the more mundane style here just does not work. I think that we are in China, at least that is what I can figure from the names. The dialogue with characters seems to be filled with holes, it did not make the main character the least bit likable.

A sticking point alone about the zombies. First, there was no entrance wound to the zombie she stuck a blade through the head of. Even if the corpses of the graveyard were animating, the way these zombies looked did not feel that likely, they were all missing shoes (although maybe that is a thing in China) and one guy had a baseball cap. But these are apparently not even "zombies", instead they are "Jiangshi", and apart from being reanimated zombies they are a bad fit, granted modern zombies are pretty close to ghouls. The defining trait for a Jiangshi is that they are supposed to be stiff, move around by hopping and have their arms stretched out, and some things that make them akin to a vampire. But rather than any defining traits that might make them interesting, they just look like zombies and boring.

This is not starting out well.

Ep 1
The only thing of amusement was the female (lead?) character's matter-of-fact style of speaking which turned the situation into a sort of black comedy.

I am of the mind that the source material is also probably as amateurishly written, so circumstantially this is as "good" of a start as the studio could produce for a first episode.

The issue is that it isn't a "terrible" show it simply is relatively boring watch.

episodes one and two

I'm.... sort of enjoying this? I don't feel like the show really deserves it, but I am. Houhou's bizarre, dry responses to everything amuse me. As did the main character losing his fight after all the hyping. Overall, actually, the show feels just like a really dry parody and it isn't working spectacularly, but it is working well enough to keep me around for now.

It has wuxia elements so I'm sort of interested in this show but it can't seem to maintain one tone. The comedy doesn't work out and doesn't mesh well with the serious bits. That's my major complaint. The exaggerated faces of the main character just doesn't really make the situation funny and I'd like this show to be more serious. I'm probably better off rewatching Return of the Condor Heroes.

episode three

I actually think I'm going to stick with this. It's a mess, but in a way that's not boring or terribly irritating, so it's just made me curious instead. This is likely an accidental success on its part, but hats off to it.

Has anything ever gone well for a character desperately trying to get rid of their v-card?

Episode 11

This show isn't getting a lot of love, it seems. It is by no means an astounding title, but I've been enjoying some of it. I liked this episode that was all about HouHou's background (sort of - still a lot of mystery there). I can't find any indication of how many episodes are left, but it isn't giving off a vibe like it'll be wrapped up in 1 or 2. That doesn't mean anything, though.

Hey Blood-, long time no see.

Yeah, in my opinion saying that it is not outstanding is a little of an understatement, although I think that I have got some enjoyment. Perhaps a little in the so bad its good way, but even if that is so it at least has that unlike another show (Scared Rider), and I think I have been a little interested in the plot.

The real problem for me is the hero, he just feels so hard to care about. I think the show tries to put his virginity woes as something the audience is supposed to care about or connect with, but the series young man's seek for losing his V card as something he actively has to be punished for, and it becomes across a bit hateful on the topic, like anger against a world that won't let you get laid. But one of the good scenes in the series was when he got angry at Houhou for getting prostitutes to "help him". Although the character designs did come across a little hateful.

Another problem is that I can't point out why, but it feels a little sexist. There are elements that work against that, like Houhou being a badass, while having things like being awkward appearance and personality, or portrayal of that daughter who was trying to meet her father's expectations, which included being a date bargaining chip. It is hard for me to put a finger on, it does not even seem like the same problem with what Hybrid Heart has, just something off.

Hey, DP - glad to see you are still active in this forum.

I can't say I've really picked up on the sexist thing too much. I actually don't mind th protagonist, but yeah the whole virginity thing doesn't do much for me.

For me, the biggest problem with the show is that it seems to scattershot. There doesn't appear to be any throughline that is driving the story forward. Characters and situations get introduced and then basically disappear.

I like the fact the show is set in China, but I wish they'd do more with it. Right now, it feels like it could be Japan but their just calling it China.

Episode 12 (finale):

Oh, they did wrap it up after all. Well, there is clearly a springboard into a second season, but who knows if such a beast will ever get made. If not, I feel like here was an okay stopping place even though the questions about Fuu HouHou would remain unanswered. I'd watch a second helping even though the best I could give the show was a Decent rating and frankly I feel like I'm being a bit generous.

Episode 12 (finale)

The Houhou backstory storyline wasn't bad, which made it end on a bit of a high note, though for it to have been good just kind of makes the rest of the season stand out. Not feeling too bad that it is ending, but to tell the truth I maybe would not mind finding out more.

I have already given a lot of my grievances for the series already, overall I think it tended to be a bit tasteless. The china setting was interesting, but apart from borrowing a couple things like kung-fu mythos and terms like "Jiangshi", I don't think there was really any point to an anime having the setting. I think that the so called Jiangshi held little in common with the legends. And the setting could at times be used with making stereotypes, like clothes, I was kind of thinking that some sort of Chinese politics would be relivant, like how the one child policy has made a generation of without siblings, but it was oddly quiet on the subject.

Fanservice was clumsily used with action to kind of drum up interest, which added to some problems, but I think was part of what made this a so bad it is good view, which would probably be up to tolerance of these elements. Soran was boring, but Houhou was interesting in an unorthodox way, although not always happy how she was used, I think she was used well with the escort plot. I give a rating of Not really good (4/10), you won't come out thinking it is good, but you might still think that it was not a total waste of time.
