I've read on various manga blogs/forums that One Piece has exceeded 158 million tankoubon in Japanese sales. Eight million less is Dragonball. Though I do wish Dragonball would forever be the NUMERO UNO in Japanese manga sales. I can relax because I've read that Dragonball is still the Numero Uno in overall global manga sales with over 300,000,000. Though One Piece may outsell it in Japan, it hasn't yet beat the global manga sales. Thank you.

Wow, who cares. Both series are beloved in Japan and around the world they aren't in competition with each other. But I guess DB fans who care that much still have their bragging rights.

You've also got to consider that One Piece is, what, 20 volumes longer than Dragonball by now? Does that make it better or worse than Dragonball? No...just longer

Considering One Piece is very much a spiritual successor of Dragonball, in tone and some themes, I don't see what the problem is. It is not a competition since Dragonball has been done for over a decade by now and both creators are apparently so cool with one another they have done crossovers with the two properties so...

Having loved both series at some point in my life (Dragon Ball and DBZ back in 2002/2003, One Piece now) I have no problem with One Piece being number one. It deserves it.

One Piece is A LOT better, IMO. Watching/Reading Dragon Ball Z again it just feels lacking.

Maybe it has something to do with One Piece being more recent and recent series often getting more attention? Sorta like how there's lots of great 80s anime I know little about and few groups will fansub.

Also, OP really does have much better plot continuity. The personality and powers of characters (not just main, but those generally met and interacted with) are a lot more interesting too.

I think you also get a sense of groundedness and geography in OP that makes you feel connected to the setting which is absent in DBZ. I mean, you have Planet Namek, and then individual people's homes, but often you have no idea what city you're in, or if you're on some random turf in a desert.

However, I read Dragon Ball is a franchise that is roughly $3.5 billion.

I think you can do a better comparison with Dragon Ball, not DBZ. From the little I've seen of One Piece, it seems that it's more similar to Dragon Ball than DBZ. Also, we shouldn't discount the fact that Toriyama apparently didn't even want to start DBZ.

We shouldn't dismiss the fact that the One Piece manga-ka was influenced by Toriyama. So the fact One Piece owned DB in Japan could perhaps be contributed to this influence.

I enjoy one piece a helluva lot more than any Dragon Ball or DBZ, i just never fell in love with the DBZ series like everyone else did.
