If I'd have discovered Valérian et Laureline in the 1980s instead of Urusei Yatsura I probably would be into bandes desinées instead of manga and I'm sure my French literacy would be farther along than my kanji literacy.

One of the most influential artists of bande dessinée has passed away.
R.I.P. Mézières.
I discovered bandes dessinées earlier than manga, in the mid-eighties, when I was in elementary school and Valérian et Laureline was one of my first bédés I rented from a library. I loved the few volumes I got my hands on. The world building and art were sublime and made me dream of adventures in a galaxy far away. A few years later I watched a lot of anime on TV, one was Urusei Yatsura, which was also one of the very first manga I got. |
