So I assume this is less dark and more genuine romcom-y from the premise compared to the authors' past work?

No it's still a psychological romance type one, nearly all the characters are androids so it's easier to distance yourself from their suffering compared to Happy Sugar Life though.
Too bad it will end so soon, I was kind of hoping for another Happy Sugar Life miraculous case where the anime would be ahead of its original at some point.
I hope that their next work will also be a psychological romance series, this author really masters this genre well.
