Huh, what a weird first episode. It is not bad in that it looks good animation wise and shows some fun character interaction but it makes for a strange introduction, or rather a lack of one. Having read the novels I know who everyone is and such but someone new to the series is not informed at all besides a short blurb about Zenos. The plot summary in the opening post provides a heck of a lot more information than the actual episode does and I would not call that a good thing. I suppose the future episodes will have flashbacks or such, or maybe episode 2 starts from the actual beginning?

Yah, this felt more like the first episode of season 2 than season 1. It's not unusual for a pilot episode to begin with a flash forward if that's what's going on here, but it is kind of weird for it to be the entire episode without any explanation.

Episode 1

At first I thought this was gonna be a chillaxing story about a healer and his harem when suddenly it swerved into slavery and such. MC is the Black Jack of this fantasy world and fits into the "seemingly gruff, but actually a nice guy" mould. Hmm. I enjoyed it enough to watch more but it is by no means in the "sure thing" category.

The set-up with a kingdom with a healer driven economy reminds me of another anime called The Great Cleric, which I enjoyed enough to watch all the way through. If similarities continue, there will be a lot of corruption and arrogance among the healers, and they'll all charge high prices for their blessings.

And there's some stuff you can figure out even without a proper intro.

That talk about the guy revitalizing a broken area is probably because he's charging fees that people can afford even if he is talking about always getting paid. He charged the @$$hole noble a ton, but he charged the slave a simple errand and set her free, for example.

And the fact that all of the females in his harem are demi-humans probably means that there's a lot of prejudice against demi-humans since they all live in the slum and there was nary a human to be seen except for the MC.. Of course, the way the aristocrat was treating his slave could tell you that too.

Mmmn...and the MC was probably betrayed somehow, which is why he's trying to act like he doesn't care about anything but money and is hanging out in the barrio. Maybe he got kicked out of his party by a bunch of morons even though he was the only thing holding them together Wink

It's more likely something more serious than that though since he doesn't have a healing license. Feels like he's on the run.

What happened to the first part of the story that told why the MC was living in the slums and how he met the demi-humans, Maybe there will be flashbacks but if not, they left too much background out that is necessary to the story. I had to verify that this was the first episode of the first season a couple of times. I will continue watching at this point since it is a good story.

I liked that he had a couple of offensive and defensive abilities as well as healing.

:::::::::::adjusts glasses:::::::::::

In some RPG and video games, healers are sort of a middle ground between fighters and mages. They can wear armor and use weapons, just not as effectively as fighters. And they have some spells other than healing, just not as effective or as varied as a mage. So if you're solo playing, a healer is actually one of the best options because you can heal yourself instead of constantly going bankrupt buying potions and such.

But the thing is, in systems where group classes are divided and only the healer can heal, the healer gets treated as if they're made of glass even if they're actually fairly tough. It's because if the healer is taken out, the whole group is &$%#ed. Which means, the healer stays in the back, and if any opponent even scratches the healer, the whole party panics and piles on as if someone's trying to make bacon out of the prize pig.

A lot of anime take this dynamic and treat healers like helpless, benign types, useless against anything but unholy monsters.

Just saying, it's good to see that the MC goes against that type.

Edited to change one verb.

While all that is true, as that noble dude in the first episode and the plot summary make clear, Zenos is not a regular healer and you should not expect other healers to be like him.

I gotta be brutally honest here, after seeing the second episode I consider the first one an utter waste of time/effort and it made for a bad start (maybe it was made just to fill a week?). This week's episode was an actual proper introduction in which we learned about Zenos, how he met Lily and how the underground clinic with a wraith also living in the building started.

While the story is nothing spectacular most of the characters have some quirky charm to them. Add some solid gags and fun interaction and you have an amusing time.
Main character wise Zenos was used and abused by his former adventuring party and thus is not aware how crazy his healing is, said healing looked pretty well animated.

So yeah, the second episode made me far more interested in seeing more than last week did. The three demi-human leaders will somehow turn into a harem and the former party will run into issues without Zenos because of course they will. I also look forward to seeing more OP healing.

I agree that the weird flash forward did more harm than good. I went into this episode with The Brilliant Healer's New Life on my "Likely to Get Cut List" just because of the weak impression the first episode made on me, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people dropped it. But the anime picked up where it should have started off and was much more solid.

BTW - he really did get kicked out of an adventuring party? That's hilarious. Smile . I was just being snarky.

I am currently reading this web novel and was utterly appalled that the first episode had skipped most of the first chapter. The information you got from it would be confusing to any one that hadn't read the source material. I was going to give this show until this episode to straighten out or it would be the first one I dropped. Now it is back to the first episodes of chapter 1, where it should have started in the first place.

I am struggling to see the greater interesting story elements Rebecca mentioned from the light novel in this swamp of a basic over powered but dumb character earning approval of the chicks and comically evil nobles and other people who pretend to be strong and thus must be punished for the crime of not being the main character.

If I am to enjoy this series at all I will probably be skipping through the mindless main character worship segments.

I do lose respect for any character that buys a slave, even if with the intention of freeing straight away. It is just supporting the slavers.

Other than that the second episode was much better, while I was actually pretty confident that I would drop this show if it did nothing better by halfway through the episode.

Episode 3 was another amusing one. Zenos has not only managed to meet all three of the demihuman leaders (eating an explosive sure is something) but has now managed to create peace between the factions. Letting them carve/bloody one another until they are tired of the useless violence is actually not a bad way to go about it. It showcased that Zenos would rather earn less in peace than profit in chaos (plus that his healing is plain ridiculous).

I am less enthusiastic about there being a tad too many harem gags for one episode. It could be me but the episode felt rather fast paced too.

This one's skating on thin ice with me right now. I do like Zenos, and the royal knight guy perfectly summarized the current reality (for some of us at least), and Carmilla is fun. But.

I don't like the trope of the demi-females all being humanoid while the demi-males are animaloid. I don't like the jealous squabbling of his harem, and I especially don't like Lily going from grateful child to pouting brat. Had more than enough of that with MIddle-aged Shopper. Actually this is duplicating all of the stupid beats of that series that annoyed me so.

Knowing me, I'll probably stick with it, groaning all the way.
