It is interesting that while Kyle goes back in time to get a better ending they did in fact succeed in defeating the demon king. Usually the whole ''getting sent back in time'' spiel is used because they horribly failed.

I'm assuming this time it's about preventing other party members from dying.

If I had to guess - not that anybody would have to force me - I'd bet that the main character lost a lot of his companions because they had to deal with all kinds of sabotage and politicking and betrayals from their own side, so that in a way, he'll be focusing as much of his energy on kicking his own side's asses into gear as fighting the enemy.
I'm a complete sucker for the time regression genre, but I'd like to see them pick one of the staples like Reincarnation of the Strongest Sword God or SSS Class Suicide Hunter and really give them the Solo Levelling star treatment, instead of taking an awesome web novel like A Returner's Magic Should be Special and putting out an okay anime. Of course, those are all Chinese or Korean web novels where this genre is insanely popular, and that might be a factor. This source material is Japanese, but I'm not familiar with it, and just based on the trailer, this looks more like it's getting The Beginning After the End treatment production wise. But I'll definitely give it a chance and hope for the best. |

The plot summary makes it sound like humanity etched out a close victory but even calling it a pyrrhic one is dubious. Yeah, the demon lord is dead and so are some of his elites but most of humanity was exterminated. Hell, if there are enough demons left they could still have won the war.
Anyway, I liked the first episode. It was effective in showcasing how badly things went the first time and how scarred Kyle has ended up due to it. It makes sense why he needs time to believe that he has gone back in time. I am rather curious to see how he will use his knowledge to make things different. |

When an anime works, the animation is part of the story. There's dialogue, plot, voice acting, characterization, etc, but the animation is another organic element of the process so that I don't even think to separate them. When an anime doesn't work, the animation is just obviously the vehicle through which those other elements are expressed, either because the animation is clumsy and distracting or because it outshines the story too much.
The animation barely passed with the pilot episode of New Saga IMHO. There are a hell of a lot of still frames and blank backgrounds and all those other little budget saving tricks, but ultimately I stayed immersed in the story and liked it. I thought it was interesting that the time regression had a tangible cause - they often don't in this kind of story. And the animation studio is obviously understaffed or working on a tight budget or something, but they made a sincere effort. Showing a few drops of blood lingering on a stone floor saved frames, but it also worked. And the artist(s?) drawing Kyle's face did a great job expressing a lot with his pale, gaunt, anguished features. The bonds between Kyle and his family and friends felt real, and it also made the loss he must have felt when they died feel real in...I don't know, is it hind sight or foresight in this context? The childhood friend is a bit simplistic character wise, and I don't know if she's the beloved he mentioned in the prologue or not - I kind of hope not. I'm interested in seeing how he plans to save his village, and I'm invested enough to root for it. Liked it. |

Yeah, I can see the budget issues.
However, for the now pretty common fantasy anime this is well done. We get a good immersion into the protagonists perspective, some world building and a sense of the weight and stakes the circumstances have generated. Its not fresh, but I think its worth checking out for anyone with an interest in your medieval fantasy anime. |

Episode 1
I came in feeling dubious about this given that it's a premise that has been done a few times now, but it engaged me more than I expected. Certainly enough for me to check out more. It strikes me that this might have been a show I stuck with in the Spring when I was only juggling 10 titles. Can it survive an environment where I'm watching 3x that amount and starting to feel pressure to lighten the load? TBD. |

I like that episode two made clear that while Kyle is no smooth operator he is thinking ahead and making the most of his knowledge. He also made his feelings towards Liese clear in order to have no regrets. Quest wise there was quite a bit of progress in that Urza has joined the party (somewhat against her will), funds have been gained and the spirit of the sword has been met. Surprising is everyone indicating that very flawed idiot Theron is a rather skilled warrior.

Episode 2
Considering I sampled this title as a cma move (cover my ass - a title I don't think I'll cotton to, but check it out anyway just in case it surprises me), it has turned out to be surprisingly entertaining for me. It's not that it's doing anything special, but there seems to be some kind of secret sauce I can't really identify that's making it a fun experience for me. |

I don't entirely remember why he doesn't want to reveal he's a time traveler, but "say secret name you couldn't possibly know out loud causing the childhood friend you were trying to keep out of your party to join" doesn't make me think "smart guy."

Agreed. I put that on par with another bone-headed move from a different show this week, Hell Teacher: spoiler[Teach has the hots for a female colleague who has already indicated in strong terms she doesn't like supernatural stuff. So what does he do in the latest episode? Tells her he has removed an unseen spirit from her back, with predictable reaction.] Ah, the eternal cluelessness of anime males.

Yeah, this is not great or anything but a little more enjoyable than something so very generic should be.
Possibly its that its executing its time gimmick reasonably well. I think theres also a bit more of an effort to write the side characters as something resembling actual people (even though we know they are ultimately just moons to orbit our MC). |

I liked how they just dug a tunnel straight down into the treasure room instead of going the usual route of having the MC show off by displaying his mad skills and foreknowledge to circumvent each obstacle as if it were nothing.
That's a common sense, non flashy approach that you don't often see in these kinds of stories. |
