A show being stupid can be a good or bad thing. In the case of Detectives' first episode I liked the brand of stupid on display. Mashiro is highly capable, insane and a meme machine while Nagumo is trying to play the old fashioned detective while being allergic to modern tech, insects and physically breaking down. The chemistry between the two works well enough that I want to see more episodes, the big question is if things become repetitive or not long term.

Me, I think the anime is pretty cheeky in having moments where it openly acknowledges that it's an anime, like having Mashiro pull large objects out of 4th dimensional space Bugs Bunny style with no explanation whatsoever. If it's not meta, it's at least meta adjacent. Oddly, I had a harder time suspending my disbelief over the idea that Negumo doesn't know what a smart phone is. The anime wasn't everything I was hoping it would be - right now Lord of Mysteries is the only newbie that I'm enthusiastically getting behind already - but I thought it was kind of fun.

Nagumo would definitely make more sense as a time-traveller or someone who was in suspended animation for a while.

Episode 1
Is this show a threat to win "Most Sophisticated Comedy of 2025"? No. No, it's not. Did it manage to elicit a respectable number of chuckles, chortles and guffaws from me despite that? Yes. Yes, it did. I'm not proud of that fact, but here we are. I agree it's ridiculous that Nagumo doesn't know what a smartphone is but when Mashiro asked him what he thought those things everybody was holding were and he answered, "hand mirrors", I did snicker. Naturally, Junichi Suwabe is Negumo's seiyuu... who else but the cranky-sounding, gravel-voiced Suwabe would have been cast? It's funny, after listening to dozens of his roles over the years, I finally checked out his page in the ANN Encyclopedia and he looks absolutely nothing like his voice made me think he'd look. For one thing, I guess I expected him to have a mustache or beard like so many of his characters seem to have. Anyway, off to a solid start for me. |

This show was not on my radar, but I was sold on it the moment that Mashiro started pulling random objects out of her school uniform and doing her best Furuhata Ninzaburo imitation, which I was totally not expecting! The first episode certainly does live up to the series' title! I'm definitely in for the entire ride.

Episode two proved that the show can go from not at all serious to slightly more serious (yet not really) on the drop of a hat. The first case was innocent enough if you forget about the half naked pervert and the actual ghost at the end. The second/third case started with panties and ended with a bomb. I was expecting the bomb to be a gag but no, it was an actual explosive. Mashiro is still delivering the memes and references, I had to laugh at the inspector being just as bad with tech as Nagumo.

I've seen a lot of people talking about "okay" not being enough in a season as crowded as this one, and I get that. I'm also watching more anime than I'm used to right now and am rewatching Gran Blue Dreamin' S1 when I can and the premieres aren't done yet.
So, I like to call anime that are okay but still getting dropped "no-kay." Now as long as this anime maintains this level of energy and cheerful chuckles, I'm okay with it, not no-kay with it, even if the anime sometimes puts the stupid in stupid fun. Now, Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra, Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show, Dekin No Mogura: The Earthbound Mole, Nyaight of the Living Cats, Uglymug Epicfighter, Onmyo Rebirth, Kamitsubaki City Construction, Hell Teacher, and Bad Girl that's right, I edited you in Bad Girl, what are you going to do about it?...anyway, they've all got laser sights targeted on them. Forget the 3 episode rule, one false episode and bam! Last edited by Edjwald on Tue Jul 08, 2025 6:52 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Yeah, okay, that's probably a lie. But not with all of them! Not by much! You hear me?!? I mean it this time! Mostly! |

Episode 2
Oooooo, big talk, tough guy! Hey, look, if *I* have to watch 40+ shows this season then YOU have to watch 40+ this season, mmmkay??? Anime: not a hobby but a sickness. In any case, this show and Grand Blue Dreaming 2 are delivering on the "big, dumb, stupid fun comedy" meter and I couldn't be happier about it. My fave moment of episode 2 was when Mashiro sent her selfie with the bomb. The absolutely dopey expression on her face was priceless. I figured out what Ghost Boy was up to even before Nagumo laid it out, so clearly I have the makings of a great detective myself. Frankly, I think Mashiro should be investigating why her besotted classmate has ink black eyeballs... drugs? Demonic possession? With this show, anything is possible. |

What’s crazy is that I sneaked a peek at the upcoming Fall 2025 season to see if things are going to calm down a little, and it’s also sequel packed with Spy Family 3, One Punch Man 3, My Hero Academia the Final Season, Campfire Cooking in Another World 2, To Your Eternity 3, Ranma ½ 2, Ao No Orchestra 2, Kakuriyo Bread and Breakfast 2, Let This Grieving Soul Retire 2, Kingdom 6, and Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray 2.
And traditionally, new show announcements keep trickling in during the months before a season officially starts, and there’s already lots of cool looking new shows too. Now I don’t think that’s quite as power packed a sequel line up as this summer, if only because One Punch Man, My Hero Academia, and To Your Eternity have all take some serious brand damage lately, but we’re still talking a lot of shows that have loyal audiences. I’m already locked in to 6 shows before I even start sampling other anime. Again. On the one hand, I'm a little worried that oversaturation is in process. On the other, if the trend means more shows are getting sequels sooner than seven years, I'm happy. |

I'm still reeling under the deluge of this season's firehose... my psyche isn't ready to peer into the future just yet, but it is interesting to note the torrent of sequels. Yes, there definitely seems a trend toward speedier sequelization which I applaud. I guess The System has finally figured out there is a financial advantage to bringing out the tried and true earlier as oppose to later. Mind you from a personal perspective, the only two on that list I plan to check out are OPM 3 and To Your Eternity 3 and for me they definitely fall into "serious brand damage" category, but their stellar initial seasons make me hope for a somewhat return to form.

The flood of anime that is ever increasing reminds me of other forms of entertainment and that comes with pros and cons. Just looking at videogames shows that every year has more releases than you can ever feasibly play and there is a lot of quality to choose from. On the other hand, there is a limit to the total amount of free time and that means some winners and a lot of losers. If you have room to watch 20 shows a week max then more and more will get dropped.

Personally, after two episodes, I like this show a lot. It's got a unique kind of wackiness to it, especially with the occasional "Man-shiro" faces that Mashiro makes when she's feeling annoyed. I also find it funny that Kana Hanazawa is playing her, which is a nice change of pace from the characters she played this past Spring.

I looked up Furuhata ninzaburo just to see what the hell was going on with those face transformations. Google says he's sort of a Japanese Columbo.
And yah, I think the makers and voice actors are all having fun making this anime, and it shows. |
