This is it, another battle Shonen that the general public will make popular while almost everyone at ANN will hate it.

I enjoyed the premiere a fair bit, but was kind've deflated when it morphed into a, uh, battle-school shounen? I still find it's OK to put on when bored, but it went from something that felt reasonably novel to just the same old thing slightly reskinned pretty fast.

"General public" and "popular" are a bit of a generous interpretation of a show doing well in a niche category on Netflix

If it does consistently better than Raw like DanDaDan I’ll consider it a crossover hit. Still fun enough even if rather basic.

Don’t quote me on this, but apparently the mangaka is intentionally going for a “2000s Shonen” feel, which is part of why it feels generic (or kinder, “retro”).

I didn't even know about this? Wow. This REALLY slipped by, and I knew about Gachiakuta when most didn't lol.

This is kinda going toe to toe with the other edgy shonen series that came out - Gachiakuta. From what I've seen & heard, Gachiakuta seems much more well-known so it's strange to see this doing better in terms of popularity it seems.

Having seen both, Tougen Anki is a more standard story with more (?) action and generally more entertaining while Gachiakuta has so much edge, it cut me at Ep2 and I don't need extra trauma thank you...(ie hard to watch for the violence)

It's a re-telling of Momotaro, of course it's huge in Japan. They absolutely love their folklore and myths.

So this is basically the "If you use a beloved folk tale as basis you will have an easier time building popularity" princible the director of Ne Zha mentioned? Cool

Well I certainly have been enjoying the show so it's good to hear it's also been doing well.

I see the damage control is already happening trying to downplay this...

Ironically episode 3 is when it begins to lighten up.

The 'damage control'? What? Do you think there is some deep state within ANN from commentors? Are you a lunatic?

lol it's not a "deep state" it's just haters trying to say a popular show isn't popular in the comments of an article that proves its popular because they don't like it. Not that deep or complex.
