"The way that Eckles, the character in question, reacts to her is in line with the sort of facile writing about slavery found in many lower-quality isekai works, which does feel deliberate, because Gwon's writing is otherwise smarter and better than that. Still, it's likely to be a problem for some readers, and it is uncomfortable."

Further down the line, it does turn out to be a BIG issue for Penolope.

I think I’ve decided that this story ultimately isn’t for me, but I’m glad to know that something really, REALLY got lost in the adaptation from novel to manwha, because my memory of reading the Webtoon version was that her past experiences of her brothers didn’t quite line up with “abusive”; like, she would recall them asking how her day went or something and equate that to the Hard Mode outcome where Penelope might literally die if she didn’t pick the right answer. And that made me think that this was going to be a story about New Penelope discovering how all her perceptions had been wrong and that was going to hold true for Hard Mode as well and that was what was making it actually be difficult, insert platitude about preconceived notions and making assumptions here.

I’m actually pretty relieved to hear that, no, she actually was being abused (as terrible as that sounds) and it wasn’t all “just in her head”, as it were.

I'm not sure if I'll read this instead of checking out the manwha, but that it dives even deeper into the story/characters is cool.

Penelope is kind of a self-involved character to an extent...not that I mean this in a critical way so much as, because of her experiences and desperation to stay alive, it colors a lot of how she sees and interacts with people and sometimes prevents her from seeing what's really going on around her or what other people are doing. It makes her a very complicated, yet still compelling, Heroine (along with her sassy retorts).

While I enjoyed what I read of the fan translation... this doesn't understand how otome games work either because otome games are almost always visual novels and don't have difficulties...

This isn't actually totally true. The hiccup is that the stuff that is like that tends to not get translated. The vast majority of otome games translated into English are from Idea Factory and they don't do that. But there are old ones that do have difficulty levels and careful management of affection levels that isn't just "pick these answers" and yeah, sometimes have multiple protagonists. Almost no one goes back and translates old visual novels that might not even run well on modern PCs, especially since otome games were almost totally overlooked for a very long time.

I was glad when I heard the announcement of the novel translation. I'd read two volumes of the manhwa and got hooked on the story. However, the cover is making me reconsider buying it. Why are the covers for Korean novel translations from Yen Press so ugly? They say you shouldn't just a book by its cover but it looks so unappealing that it's decreasing my motivation to read the story and my mood is directly proportional to how much I enjoy a story.
