The streets of the nation's capital are soaked in blood as political upheaval and rising tensions between masterless, wandering ronin and government samurai set the stage for one of the most turbulent times in Japan's history. Young orphan Nio is no stranger to the harsh realities of the world, and yet he can't help but cling to his burning passion for justice and desire to change the world for the better.

One day, he crosses paths with two men who will become central figures of the coming revolution: Hijikata Toshizo and Okita Souji, two of the founding members of a group of hated ronin known as the Miburo—who would later become known as the Shinsengumi. Inspired by the efforts of the so-called "Blues Wolves of Mibu," Nio decides to join the ranks to help carve a path to the world he wishes to see. But with new betrayals and reversals every day, will Nio be able to stay true to his conscience?

I generally like Japanese historical dramas from this time period, but I think I'll give this one a pass. I may actually be a little full with respect to this particular era.

I share Blood's opinion so I hope that the show offers something beyond the premise to make it worth watching.

That was a weird premier. It's ostensibly a story being told about Nio and the Shinsengumi, but near the end, the voiceover seems to be Nio's pov. At first I thought, "Oh, hey, Nio turns into the old man, but no, he's Shinpachi. (Maybe Nio grows up to be Gintoki? Wink)

It was...ok, but every time someone burst into a big grin, it was so ugly it made me wince. I don't know what they were thinking.

Side note: In Caitlin Moore's review in the Preview Guide, she mentions three other series. I've watched all three, but had to look them up to remember what any of them were about or who the generic protagonists were. Not sure whether to laugh or cry about that...

I kind of already have a full viewing schedule (too full in fact) but I still decided to have a gander. The first episode left me feeling uncaring in that nothing was bad yet nothing was that good or noteworthy either. If I had to describe the premiere then the word would be bland and the problem is that this season is too loaded for bland.

That said, I am sure that those who love the time period/setting will be invested.

man as usual, just too many anime get released and we get dull historical dramas that sadly come out after the previous season had The Elusive Samurai.

This is just not well animated and the characters, outside of the lead, are forgettable. Just another waste of time in an industry that is more than willing to greenlight too many shows instead of picking shows people will actually give a shit about.

You have to get slightly more critical every year since the schedule is getting fuller and fuller.
A show like this one might have had a small fanbase if it released during the calmer 2010 seasons... but not now.

I hate feeling like I'm being a snob and a villain since I know I have been called out before for being extremely prudish towards a lot of shows every season, but when there are so many...there is no more room for being decent enough. You have to be compelling and good and with the industry eating itself inside and out and burning out its animators, there is no more excuse for how bad a lot of anime has gotten.

And we are back straight into the telling of the civil war in the group between the Kondo Faction and the Serizawa Five. Its worth noting that apart from the protagonist Nio and cowardly Tarō most of the group (including the third kid) are real members of the Shinsengumi. And this sumo wrestler massacre that they perpetrated in Osaka which left ten wrestlers dead and many others injured actually happened.

Serizawa was a real bastard even before the start of this series being part of the group that assasinated Ii Naosuke and serving prison time for unilaterally executing three members of his own Tengu-to group by having them kneel in a line then simultaneously beheading them with a single sword swing. I am not sure if it will show it in the anime but he will later go on to extort money from a silk shop and then destroy it with a cannon!

spoiler[Shinpachi (who survived the war then through family connections became a provincial governor and then a sword instructor to prison guards) is one of the few in the Shinsengumi that historically survived to become an old man, most of the rest of the group (apart from the 3rd kid who was son of an assassin and ironically survived to become an undercover police officer) all died in the civil war between the Shinsengumi factions or during the Boshin war about four-five years after the start of the series.]

Well, the first couple of episodes are already better than the whole first season was. I like the new guy already. With how packed this season looks to be, I don't know if I'll stick it out, but I'm still in for now.

S2 E13

Overall, this has been much better than the first season, but I suppose that might be damning with faint praise? But they finally did Sarazawa in, though it took five or six episodes to do it. They kept rehashing the same True Samurai™ themes, but it was mostly exciting. My biggest beef was how it was raining throughout but no one ever seemed to get very wet. Worst of all, they leaned into how bloody it all was, but the rain never washed the blood off anyone's skin or even made it run. The blood was like someone had slapped red clay on their hands and faces (especially so for Kondo Smile). Very distracting and killed the drama and tragedy of the moment, when it was an opportunity to visually enhance it had they done it right.

Looks like there's at least one more ep after this. Might be two cours for all I know.
