I think it should be noted Murata is only the illustrator for the Jump remake version of One Punch Man and not One's webcomic version and he's also only the illustrator for Eyeshield 21 and the mangaka is Riichiro Inagaki as I see a lot of people get their roles mixed up and the article only lists him as a One Punch Man artist.

Just a reminder that your favorite authors, illustrators, voice actors, idols or whatever probably have even darker takes on things. They're just smart enough not to blast them all over the internet... or simply use burner accounts.

Sigh, another one into the bin of (known) disappointments.

Definitely feels like something has emboldened this, because Akiman has also gotten way worse and way more flagrant about retweeting whatever bigoted stuff comes across his feed

What even compels people to post hateful stuff publicly? Like don’t they have a smidge of self-awareness that this is going to turn away people and hurt themselves financially?

It’s the internet. People can write nice things while still having ugliest thoughts. You will never be sure.

If this doesn't perfectly exemplify a glass-half-empty, glass-half-full dichotomy, boy I don't know what does. But for my money, I'd prefer to approach life not thinking folks are secretly all terrible people lying to my face. Just makes things easier for me.

When people live in a closed-enough bubble, they get the impression that whatever they believe in is just common sense, even when it couldn't be further from the truth.

Japan's Islamic population has been a discussion point for awhile now with them demanding Japan change laws for them like removing pork from restaurants to accommodate them, praying in public and disturbing people, and demanding Japan build cemeteries for them as the Japanese practice of cremation is against their beliefs. Many Japanese citizens have been pushing back to these demands so I imagine you'll see more vocal complaints about this subject as things heat up more and more creators and tensions rise. Also in part with X now auto-translating posts and promoting cross English/Japanese algorithm people are going to be exposed to Japanese creators thoughts a lot more that otherwise would have been mostly kept to the Japanese side only outside the people who went out to look up their favorite creators thoughts.

All I ever saw from Akiman was him complaining about "woke" (using the actual English word) making it hard to design female characters in video games these days and worrying about it affecting anime as well. Did I miss something else?
I think what "emboldened" Japanese creators is both foreign pressure to censor their works ramping up in addition to the translation changes on X/Twitter showing them that a lot of westerners actually agree with them and "the west" isn't some monolithic entity like they once thought or were once told.

A lot of western fans don't want to accept this but at one point I feel like they're going to have to accept that there's a lot more evidence that their favorite Japanese creator has beliefs they probably don't like than them not. The Witch Hat Atelier mangaka is the only one I have ever heard of actually voicing support for progressive causes in public otherwise it's nothing but popular Japanese creators being attacked for saying or doing something sexist, racist, or homophobic.
I do wonder how the next generation of Japanese creators will go given 1) Japan's younger population is leaning far more right than their parents are, and 2) they're a lot more vocal publically and internet savvy which means we'll be seeing a lot more of their thoughts compared to the older folks who aren't on the internet much. Sadly I think we're going to get more Kei Urana situations of them being harassed off social media over their comments.

This is true, they are becoming a big talking point in Japanese conservative circles.
In the UK there is also a vocal part of the Pakistani community that is pushing back against a proposed ban on first-cousin marriage, which is a major element of their culture, but also the reason why they have a higher rate of birth defects.
Murata's take on this is just completely moronic as not only does he omit this important context, but also uses an extreme statistic from a city with a high Pakistani population which is not representative of the whole picture.
