Before anyone comes in here with all their wild conspiracy theories, there's something you need to know. Unlike in say, America, where once you have a work turned into a TV show you give up all ownership rights to it, Japan allows its creators to maintain all ownership rights to their properties, which means they legally have to approve of anything and everything related to their property, for good or ill. In this case, with Narumi Kakinouchi being the creator of Vampire Princess Miyu, she's considered the gensakusha, which means "literary creator," so by Japan's copyright laws, anything involving VPM in any capacity needs her approval before getting released in any capacity, even for stuff as small as key art on packaging. Her word basically overrides everything, so this is all on Japan, not anything on AnimEigo's end. They're actually doing their damndest to get this blu-ray out for people who love the series. Most companies wouldn't dare be ballsy enough to pull something like this off. We know Crunchyroll certainly wouldn't. AnimEigo put too much into this to just scrap the whole thing entirely and let it go to waste.

It's not that simple, though, as Noboru "Sho" Aikawa (who wrote the OVA series) has stated on Twitter that neither he nor director Toshiki Hirano (who's the co-creator of Miyu alongside Kakinouchi, who's his wife) have any real say over the OVA, and that he hopes that no one comes to the conclusion that "author's negligence" has anything to do with this problems. In other words, if Aikawa & Hirano have no real say over this, then neither would Kakinouchi, especially since Hirano & Kakinouchi are still married (so it'd be weird if one side still had say but not the other).

Instead, this is more of a copyright problem with the OVA due to complications regarding who owns what. Aikawa thought that it's due to AIC Rights no longer having the rights to the show after Soeishinsha went belly up (they seemingly were absorbed into AMG Entertainment in 2006?), with Justin confirming to Aikawa that AIC Rights lost their ownership in court. AnimEigo's old license was done through Pony Canyon, and while PC "tried their best" they simply were no longer able to continue acting as the company that makes approvals for the Miyu OVA.

Yeah, that makes sense. I hadn't thought of that.

Wouldn't be surprised if the legal troubles surrounding AIC Rights didn't limit themselves solely to the Miyu IP...

In addition, MediaOCD discovered AnimEigo's contract for the work will run out next year, so the company stated it is "basically out of time to do a proper release."

Close to Sailor Moon all over again, ADV's subtitled DVD release of R lasted 7 months (and season 1 lasting 9 months) before going OOP when DiC's license expired in 2004.

As for me, pre-ordered for the Manga UK dub, the artwork issue sucks but like with the last Eva movie LE, I can live with another all-white release in my collection.

I want to re-watch this before I order it to make sure I want it as I barely remember this one, though I think I did enjoy it, at least more than the TV series, which I dropped after half a dozen episodes or so.

Having said that, the oddity of this release means I might just pick it up regardless Laughing

You can basically watch the first 5 and last 5 episodes of the TV series and get a complete story. It’s a pretty decent creepy shoujo too.

I loved the look of the restoration so I preordered the OVA too. I may just print some random artwork online and slap it onto the box.

If you happen to have the DVD, a person could stick its cover in the copier and get an admittedly lower quality copy. Resize that to Blu-ray size and stick that in there.

Or- and this is really scraping the bottom of the barrel- peel off a post-it note, flip it over, write something on the non-sticky part, and slide it sticky side out under the clear plastic and press the two together.

If you are on a computer or have access to one and a scanner, scan the original cover to your hard drive. If you don't have access to a scanner, do a search of the internet for an image from the show and copy to your computer. Even something as simple as MS Paint can resize or crop the image to an appropriate size. Print out the result. Some experimentation may be necessary.

Any word processing program can give you the title in an appropriate font and size. Print that out and cut to fit the spine of the CD case. Alternately find, online, a template for a Blu-Ray case insert for a better result.

Ummm... I have to ask: Has anybody thought of remastering the 1997 series?

People probably have, I imagine. I have no idea what the costs and rights issues are for it.

ANN's entry for it says Maiden Japan did put out a DVD in 2016.

I did see some of it in the 00's, and in my humble opinion, it was not all that great. The writing and artwork just did not feel as good. And the reviews of the OVA that mention the TV show said it was a bit of a let down. So there might not be much interest, unfortunately.

I've been a Miyu fan since the early 2000s and have been collecting the manga over the years. I'm mostly hoping all this conversation kickstarts interest in one of the manga series, there's so much out there and it was handled so poorly by Studio Ironcat all those years ago. I'd be curious to see if they somehow still hold the US publishing rights.

Given that Studio Ironcat has been out of business for two decades, it is highly unlikely that they retain any license rights. More likely is that no US company wants to pick up something that old that has already been tried by another company. There are just so many titles out there that taking some other companies leavings is not necessary.

It would be wonderful if someone did, Miyu was some seriously creepy horror. I just don't see it happening though. Never say never though, Five Star Stories is coming back so anything is possible.

I picked up the Vampire Miyu Original Soundtrack and Vampire Miyu Ongakuhen secondhand recently (well, just over a year ago).

Nice to know that anime is being re-released.
