The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
If not, please post why. [EDIT: Changed your title to reflect the topic. Please don't so vague next time, it won't hurt to just put the name. Thanks. -TK] |

I wouldn't have a problem watching it with my niece, but she's old enough to handle the mildly intense parts. It's not that long of a series, perhaps you should watch the whole thing and form your own opinion.

By intense do you mean violent? If so, is it really bloody like Elfen Lied or less graphic like Fullmetal Alchemist?

It's not Elfen Lied graphic, you don't have to worry about that. There is spoiler[a murder mystery episode...sort of] one character who spoiler[gets groped and exploited a few times -- all comedic, none terribly graphic nor violent] and also some spoiler[rampaging giant...things that don't really look all that scary, more sci-fi type], but much of the deeper storyline, and perhaps the sarcastic humor, too, will go over the heads of those too young.
Oh, but I almost forgot. spoiler[There is some violence in one episode with one character trying to stab another, with a third character leaping in between to stop it. Pretty non-graphic, IIRC, but still a pretty clear intention of bloodshed on the part of one of the characters.] What ages are you planning to watch it with? |

MIght have wanted to post here. I would say that it's not a toddler show, a little fanservice here and there proves that. I'm not saying it's a bad show, quite the opposite, but it's not quite for little kids.

Yeah, it's not a little kid show by any stretch, but that's because little kids would probably find it boring. I'm a bit of a stickler for questionable content and I would have no problem with letting a teenager or preteen watch it.

Haruhi is tame compared with many cartoons that are currently on TV. It's much less violent than most Saturday morning cartoons, has about as much fanservice as Bugs Bunny, and has less swearing than The Simpsons. The only troublesome scene is spoiler[when Mikuru is groped in order to blackmail the ill-fated Computer Society president], but that's handled in a comedic fashion. I'd rate the show for pre-teens, and recommend it over old Toonami staples like DBZ, Tenchi Muyo, and Sailor Moon.
However, there is the danger that your kid will convert to Haruhiism. |

Well, besides the constant groping of Mikuru by Haruhi, the only scene I would worry about is in Episode 10 when spoiler[Nagato gets impaled by Asakura]. It's pretty bloody and I think might be too intense for young viewers.
Of course, it depends on the viewer. I've been able to watching R rated movies since I was in Elementary school. It all depends on whether they can tell fantasy from reality and if you are there tell tell them what's right and what's wrong. |

I'd say it's a 12-13+ show. It's most definitely as bad or less bad than any PG13 movies out there.

The Christian Anime Alliance says it's appropriate for kids sixteen and up.

Now, let's just go thru that list... Violence= 4/10? It's low....but there's only ONE ep with like gory violence....I'd give it more of a 2 or 3. Language= 4/10? Once again, I recall little to no swearing... I recall one ep that Haruhi actually got bleeped in (idk if that was just the sub group I dled it from or not, though), but bleeping is ok, cause it doesn't harm kiddies. I'd give it a 1/10 at best. Sexual Content= 5/10? I'll give it that. Haruhi freaking chews on Mikuru's ear...plus there's all the groping and in ep 1 there's a minor stripping scene... Nudity=3/10? Complete crap, IMO. There is NO nudity. There's not even a buttshot, which sometimes gets overlooked for nudity. 0/10 would be my rating. Bad Religion= 6/10? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA. Wow, this is one of the least political and/or religious animes I've ever seen. I'm a catholic, and talking about time traveling, magic, and aliens aren't sins....<_< My score= 0/10. Seriously, that site is bunk. |

Well, there are several changing scenes with one character shown with little more than underwear. Not nudity per se, but the reviewer might've counted it.
Uh... (Note: major spoiler) spoiler[There's an entire group of people who worship Haruhi as God...] I'm a Christian myself and have no qualms about watching the series, but I can certainly see how some Christians would take issue with that. |

One thing you have to realize about CAA's reviews is that they're written by users on the site, too....so the reviews are pretty much never an "official opinion" of the website, so the admins of the site may or may not agree with it.

That's without mentioning that those good and honorable Christians needed to actually steal (as fansub-haters say) the series in order to review it. Bad, bad reverend.
