I cried more in Nitaboh than I did in Grave of the Fireflies.
I just finished it and I am speechless, I feel completely relaxed yet totally uplifted, inspired and melancholy at the same time. I don't think a movie has every brought out such raw emotions in me, perhaps Dancer in the Dark matched such profound and sensitive emotions. The script in Nitaboh is something that I noticed to be really amazing, simple sentences and the way they were performed by the seiyuu - especially Takateru Murata's debut as the young Nitaroh. Five minutes into the film and the gentle voice of Nitaroh had me in tears.

I was surprised that only 25 have rated the film in the encyclopedia, although it was only released internationally in 2006 I would expect an anime like this to receive a lot more attention. I do think that it requires an acquired taste to completely enjoy since it is quite slow and the gentleness of the scenery, music and voicing may not capture some people's interest. Still, I think this is a must see since nearly throughout the whole movie I had a huge lump in my throat and at moments where a character would say something infinitely loving and gentle I would have to clasp my hands around my mouth to suppress any escaping squeaks of affection for Nitaroh and the virtuous people that loved him. In the past couple of weeks I've been bingeing on anime films and so far Nitaroh is my favourite. Thanks to the fantastic Buried Treasure feature on ANN I've been learning a lot more about anime and the scope of films out there. I don't think Nitaroh is old enough to be Buried Treasure but I'm not sure where I was when it was released or talked about...

Has anyone else out there seen and loved this film as much as I have? Sure, it's not the greatest film ever made but I don't think I've seen something quite as touching and tender as it.

I was at the Tokyo Anime Fair in 2005 where they were advertising this, and had seen a trailer for it the year before as well.

I thought the snippets that I saw were so beautiful I bought the (untranslated) DVD from the exhibitor just to show my support Very Happy

I've deleted some posts because they were non-contributive. Saying "you've convinced me to download it" isn't saying much, so please reply with a proper opinion of the film after you've actually seen it. Thanks.

Well now that I've seen it, I wasn't exactly emotionally touched by this movie. However, this doesn't mean I didn't think this was a good watch. Most of the "seemingly" emotional scenes were more toward the beginning, and I didn't really feel any connection with the character at that point.

Aside from that, I still found this movie to be a good watch, due to the music. I've heard people play shamishen's before during asian festivals, and was accustomed to calling it "San Xian Qing" which in chinese translates to Three String Instrument (more or less). Back then I wasn't really interested, but from Nitaboh, I can understand how people appreciate this type of music.

I guess what I'm saying is that I took more of the musical aspect out of this anime than the emotional part. If anyone has time Nitaboh is probably something worth checking out.

Edit- Forgot to mention, I thought the ending was a little abrupt spoiler[Since, it ends right after Nitaroh finishes playing his piece during the competition, and then gives a little text thing at the end explaining what happens to him]
