I know many otakus have gripes with the infamous crowd of dubbers who brought you such jems as, well, this:



But, hey, wasn't it 4Kids that got some of you into anime (albeit we were more naïve back then). But, hey, I'm going to do the unthinkable...defend them. Why? Quite simply, because 4kids is being treated like that weird kid in English class that everyone picked on and whenever they would raise their hand to give an answer it usually resulted in everyone laughing -- even the teacher ( what's more sad is even the stoner kid knew the answer).

4kids does what it does because that's what it HAS to do it. Remember the US has stricter rules when it comes to broadcasting than Japan (or really any sane country).


See, they're trying to protect America's youth (somehow, er...how does this picture prove my point, again?) Well, moving on, the US doesn't allow the consumption of alcohol to be shown, scenes that contain blood on a children's show, guns too, smoking, etc. etc.

Also, the thing about the Americanized names and overall "Uncle Sam" feel to their dubs is justified because they're aiming the show to a younger American audience who might not know what a rice ball is.

< blame these people.

Hahaha. Is that sandwich for real? Why not Mcdonalds? Surely that floating restaurant could have been redrawn as a floating Mcdonalds.

I will admit there are a couple of things they've done that I have actually liked.

I love YuGiOh's dub. I know its corny and I know the friendship thing is really beaten into your head. But the actual voices and performances are awesome, and they show did manage to teach me a thing or two about friendship when I was little. ;- )

Also I love the 4Kids One Piece's opening as well as some of that dub as well.

4kid is evil to a grown up that is watching one piece.
i dont mind them editing smoking or changing the color of the glass tp milk.
what is really evil is the dialog.. i was watching some of there conversation and it makes no sense.. do they really have to use none sense words as fillers..

Somehow I got into anime while missing every single 4Kids production out there. I went from Galaxy Express 999 to Dragon Ball Z (DiC version admittedly, but still) to Gunsmith Cats, AKIRA, Ninja Scroll, & Ghost in the Shell to Gundam Wing to Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Still, it is true that, while they did it in a ragingly hamfisted and probably well over-reactionary way, they managed to bring a considerable wealth of anime to an entire generation of new young fans. And as far as young children's anime goes, they got some of the best there was to offer for their time. I mean, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Shaman King, One Piece, you couldn't ask for a better kids' lineup than that from the early 2000s.

That, in itself, also brings me to another point, this time about the fans. If you ask me, as ragingly hamfisted as 4Kids' editing standards were, the fan reaction was equally over the top. Fact is, 4Kids didn't go out there and find some big, deep, artistic, director's passion project for teens or adults or anything, they were adapting shows meant for the 3-10 crowd for...the 3-10 crowd of an entirely separate culture. And in most cases, they were shows for the 3-10 crowd that were meant more than anything to sell toys, not espouse profound life lessons that only an onigiri (and certainly not a sandwich) could teach. 4Kids adapted the shows they licensed to a market with hyper-protective parents and completely different ideas on cuisine, art, and at what age it's okay to expose youth to certain levels of violence and sexuality. The rage we let out over that went just a step too far, in my opinion. While we might have liked some of the shows they procured, they weren't going after things within our age group, and hell, we weren't even the intended age group for this stuff in Japan; it'd be like us turning over cars in the street because they turned the Scooby Snacks in the New Scoody Doo Adventures into popcorn. They played to the intended audience, which also happened to be the vast, vast, vast majority of their audience, and as clumsy as they may have been about it, we really had no place to rip them apart over it like we did.

On a final note...isn't 4Kids dead, or something? I've been kind of in and out of the anime scene over the last year or two, and last I heard they were one of those that suddenly went under, like ADV and Geneon.

Personally, I can't thank 4kids enough. Without them, I probably never would've discovered anime.

Nagisa also makes an excellent point: it's not like they were adapting masterpieces of film or anything. After seeing the "butchered" dubs of Sonic X and Yu-Gi-Oh I went to the "much better" subbed originals...which still turned out to be kiddie shows.

Yes, very true. Lest we forget big brother (or mother, in this case) is always watching:

We can really thank 4Kids for making anime child-friendly in America so, now the first thing that pops into people's heads when they hear 'anime' isn't

The company wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have a mistaken identity issue. Holy mackerel there were tons of screw ups, especially in the Pokemon movies. They kept calling certain Pokemon different names. A Scyther was called Alakazam and a Pidgeot was called a Pidgeotto. They also kept going back and forth between calling a rice ball a donut and the "donut" a rice ball. I don't know what they were thinking when they were dubbing the series.

Also, 4Kids didn't get me into anime. Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon did. Razz
