I have something that I've been wondering and it is just bugging me...
I have noticed at the end of some shows, it will say "next episode airs on _____ at X:59pm(Some Naruto for example). Is there some particular significance in it starting a minute before the top of the hour? |

I'd just chalk that up on the "The Japanese are weird" list.

I see. Thank you. I was asking because I was wondering more so if there were any theories(proven or speculative) that hinted at an airing having more effect or significance.
Even if none exist in our knowledge base, I can see how it could have an effect as such, since it is not on the hour you need to work just a touch harder to remember the airing date and will be less likely to miss it. |

I think it's using the same mentality of those "$X.99" price tags. They probably air some anime late, but they want you think "well, 11:59 isn't so late to watch some cartoon. At least it's not midnight."

Last time I checked, it came on at 7:30, right after Diamond and Pearl.
http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/ On the schedule, click the 'hon' character for Thursday. |

He was throwing out Naruto as an example, not specifically ask why it began at that time, which it doesn't. Oh, BTW - that's the moku kanji for Thursday, not hon.
It's not so much the Japanese; other places which had/have a predominately state-owned/state-run networks, like BBC or I think ZDF and NHK all have start times that may not necessarily match the hour, on-the-hour type of broadcasting that's here in North America. Japan's private networks probably have a similar air schedules to NHK because that's what people were used to and it has kept up as the number of private networks has increased. That's my pure speculation on the matter. |
