Here's a link to an article posted earlier this month covering the growth of manga in North America.

I'm a little surprised at the estimation that Initial D is "violent". I mean, it's certainly testosterone laden, but beyond Takumi (Tak) punching out Natsuki's (Natalie's) boyfriend in the first volume it's really not violent.
But it's certainly good that the article is pro-manga. It really is nice to read about manga being represented as a positive thing. |

Meh. The opinion was from one 14-year old boy. However, it is good advice that he gave to make sure the parents are informed about what their children are reading. Perhaps since manga is, "exotic," people tend to look more closely at the content. Really, I don't see material that's any more objectionable than some of the stuff you find in american comics...such as "Dykes to Watch Out For" or even some of the gore and violence in X-Men comics. I'm not saying that I find the material objectionable. I just think that because manga is new and different, people tend to look more closely at stuff like that in manga. They should take that one step further and realize that comics (in general) really aren't what they used to be, not just manga. And, yes, I agree with Craeyst Raygal on the article being "pro-manga." It's nice to see that for a change. |

yes good article lots of them showing up now I hope things continue to grow. as for initial d its great somethings sorta bad about it, worst is what tokyopop did to it but that not what I was talking about. as for violence? none I remember except that alreayd pointed out here

I guess the article is OK, it being pro-manga and all. But didn't you get the feeling that in their eyes manga was all SF, fantasy and such? I mean. They could say little more about mangas not exactly so fantastic. There are many titles out there that are great due to their deep look into the mind of normal people.
Of course I know that many famous titles are full of magic, fantasy etc... but there is more to the whole aspect of manga. And I think that the article missed out on that. |

very true many deal with everyday life like romance and sports etc. dealing with morals and human emotions etc. they could have mentioned that yes.
