I recently got the Area 88 OVA from ADV, and enjoyed it very much. Reading online it seems that the first disc is 2 OVAs merged into one, and that they cut out a scene in a bar between Ryoko and Kanzaki.

1: Is this a major scene?
2: Are there any other cut scenes?
3: Is it worth buying the Central Park release of the first OVA because of this?

I also have a couple of unrelated questions.

4: About where within the first disc does the first OVA end?
5: How does the show compare to the OVA?

Thanks in advance.

There is also a part with Mickey's past in Vietnam which is shortened. In the preview for volume two (which was on the original release of volume one) you can even see the scene where the US troops are getting toasted by a bunch of jungle traps. I watched this preview (back when only the first OVA existed on tape) so many times that I noticed it's absence on the DVD release.

I feel as though there are other scenes that felt shorter like the scene where Shin is standing on the runway after Boris' death felt shorter as does the scene at the end of the first OVA. Sadly enough I used to own the limited LD collection that came in the big red box but sold it many years ago, and haven't watched the "full length" versions for many years.

The last scene of OVA 1 takes place when the three escape killers are introduced and Shin snatches his helmet from them in the day. The second OVA begins when he is trying to escape in the night.

There is something really missing with the television series. I think it is the lack of flashback scenes and Kanzaki that I miss the most in the television series. The OVA seemed more dramatic and had more internal focus. The fighter animation in the OVA is much better choreographed compared to the lackluster CG in the television series. The OST for the OVA is one of the best symphonic scores for anime. I love Keiko Terada's (I was obsessed with Show-Ya in the 80s) ED credits song, but miss Mio's songs from the OVA as well.

The missing bar scene isn't terribly plot-relevant, but provides a lil' insight into the characters.

Basically, the scene goes like this-spoiler[ Kanazaki calls Ryoko to a diner to try and convince her to give Shin up and date him- after all, she doesn't even know if he's still alive. Ryoko gets mad and storms out, stopping to leave a couple dollars for the coffee she ordered- "I won't be indebted to you. Not even for a cup of coffee!" Kanazaki grumbles to himself, that she can try to get away, but soon she'll come crawling back to him.]

If you track down the original Manga Ent. disc, the scene's on there. (Unfortunately, only volume 1 got the DVD treatment from them, you'd need to get the VHS of parts 2 and 3 to check for other changes. I intend to do that eventually.) Area 88 vol. 1 was available for awhile as a double pack with Silent Service, you might look for that release.

I gave up on trying the TV series when I saw episode 1, with McCoy being genuinely nice to Rocky. McCoy ain't nice! Bad remake, bad! Laughing

Thanks.

One more question: I've heard the sub translation was changed when ADV released it. How much better is the new one than the old?

Edit: How was he nice? Did the series remove the bit where he spoiler[exposed Rocky's film?]

Yep. spoiler[ Rocky actually walked across a fair bit of desert to get to the base and was suffering from heat exhaustion (or something similar.) McCoy and his kid sidekick got him out of the heat and gave him water- for free. It was wrong, all wrong... Laughing ]

Anyway- I don't really remember if there was a sub change (I seem to think there was, but apparently noting major enough to stick in my head.) I don't speak enough Japanese to know which one would be 'better' anyway.
