Okay, so I'm browsing YouTube idly, and I come across this AMV. Ignore the video, what I want to know about is the song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGhlhb3W9jk

I recognized it, and you probably do too. It's "We Gotta Power", the second DragonballZ OP. But listen for about a minute or so, and you'll notice it's not the version you're probably used to. The vocalist seems to be the same, but the lyrics are different. They've been replaced by similar lyrics in broken english. It seems to be a re-recording or something by the same group.

What's the story with this? Did they do it to promo one of the fighting games or something? Is it common in J-rock? Why would they want to redo the song?

And most importantly- who came up with those lyrics, anyway? They're ridiculous. "Grab that special thing that makes you a man"? Dude, that doesn't mean what you think it does...

At first I was wondering if you were talking about the TV version vs. the full song version, but I guess not.... It sounds to me like the group that did that song did an English lyric version if it as well, and that's it. Although I must say, that's some of the worst Engrish I've ever heard. Ever. *pulls hair in agony*

Kageyama Hironobu did the first and second OPs and second ED of DBZ, as well as a ton of insert songs and movie theme songs; he's a fairly prolific anime musician in general. He recorded English versions of Cha-La Head Cha-La, We Gotta Power, and Bokutachi wa Tenshi Datta for his album Mixture. Despite (actually, because of) the Engrish, I think they're cute. I especially like Bokutachi wa Tenshi Datta in English.

In addition to his own anime theme songs, he does lots of covers of other shows' music too. I have versions of Flying in the Sky and Trust You Forever (the G Gundam OPs) by him and a live recording of Yuusha Ou Tanjou! (GaoGaiGar OP) that he did with Masaki Endou. I don't especially like most anime music, but he does some fun songs.
