After 50 years and 28 movies Toho has finally decided to bring the Godzilla franchise to an end. You can read about it here.

Kinda sad really, knowing there probably wont be another Godzilla movie for many years to come if Toho should decide to do a revival of some sort.

Gona miss the big G.

Eh, Toho does this every so often. They say they're gonna end the franchise, and about five to ten years later it comes back in a big way, fizzles, is "retired" once again, repeat.

Back in 1975, Toho decided to stop the series after Terror of Mechagodzilla, then brought it back in 1984 with Godzilla 1985. Then they offed Godzilla in 1995's Godzilla vs. Destroyer, only to bring him back once more in 1999 with Godzilla 2000. This is just the trend; they'll go out with a big, expensive bang like Destroyer, then bring him back in a few years for another round.

It's true though, that this latest round of films were a little lacking. Aside from 2001's GMK, there weren't any real standout winners like the previous runs. Not to mention Toho seemed to be struggling to come up with decent ideas, resorting to pitting Godzilla against Mechagodzilla, Mothra, & King Ghidorah over & over again, or simply slapping together some otherwise painfully lackluster monsters (Orga, the Battra clone Megagiras) that were all too easily forgotten once the movie ended. Also, aside from GMK and Godzilla x Mothra x Mechagodzilla, Godzilla himself was designed radically different from previous films. He may be a mutated dinosaur, but he's always had a rather feline facial structure, and the change from that to "death lizard" was somewhat drastic.

All I can say is that the latest series of films was a bit unfortunate, and their so-so quality, more than anything else, was likely the biggest cause of damage to their profitability. However, once Toho gives it a rest, hopefully by the time the big G returns (and he will return), they'll have some better ideas on hand (digging Bagan & Dogolas out of the closet would be a good place to start).

Toho has tried this before, and they brought Godzilla back every time. It's more likely that Toho will just take a five to ten year break from Godzilla films.

I think this is a good move on their part. Toho will have lots of time to let the franchise rest and come up with new stories and kaiju for Godzilla to fight. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm sick of seeing Godzilla fought Mothra and MechaGodzilla every other movie.

Amen. Though I wouldn't mind seeing King Ghidorah get more attention. He's been in a lot of films, yes, but he was basically created specifically to be Godzilla's big arch nemesis, so it's only expected he'd get a lot of outings against the Big G. Mothra was more "Toho's OTHER big hit," and Mechagodzilla was pretty much an unexpected success, seeing as how it first appeared when the Godzilla franchise was at its lowest ever coming off of Godzilla vs. Megalon (damn, I hate that one...).

Of course, I'm also an ardent supporter of Angilas making a return. Rodan, too, since he really got short-changed in the 1993 Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (shame how one of Toho's greatest creations was basically degraded to the level of piss-poor cannon fodder...).

There wouldn't really be a need for these retirements if they didn't release a Godzilla movie every year. Every 2 or 3 years would be good enough, and the market place wouldn't get over-saturated.

I have a family member that used to collect Godzilla movies. I've seen every one of them. No one is more sick than me... Twisted Evil
