It's my sisters birthday coming up and I'd like to be able to get her, among other things, a manga she would enjoy. So in your opinion what is the very best shojo manga available to buy in english? She's pretty smart so something on the same level as full metal alchemist or death note. Thanks in advance guys!

I'd recommend Alice 19th by Yuu Watase. It's a magical girl series based around the power of words and is very well done. It also is fairly short, which is something I've always felt was a good selling point.

I depends what kind of stuff your sister likes. I'd go with something like Godchild (8 vols completed), Cynical Orange (5+ vols ongoing) or Dramacon (vols 1-3 in a hardbound omnibus - I know it it is nice).
Godchild is more mystery orientated (for lack of a better term). Cynical Orange and Dramacon are more romance orientated.

Well, what is your sister into? That's kind of an important question!
If you want something "complex", go for Angel Sanctuary. It's about a boy who discovers he's the reincarnation of a female angel and then many, many things happen. There are a lot of mature themes though, like incest, so if that's not something you feel good giving her, don't. That being said Kaori Yuki's works are in general very good!
I would also recommend Fushigi Yuugi, by Yuu Watase (same as Alice 19th!), both the original series and Genbu Gaiden, as well as her Ayashi no Ceres series. (These might be a little harder to find because they are older works, with the exception of Gaiden.) But her works are very good!
It sounds like what you're looking for isn't straight romance, so I'll go ahead and recommend The Dreaming by Queenie Chan. No romance in it, but it's a very good creepy horror comic about twin girls in a boarding school in the Australian bush. Excellent OEL title (like Dramacon).

If you're looking for something along the lines as Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist, go for Fushigi Yugi. It's a good starting manga.
