I'm talking about the American remake. Did it do well there? I bet they used the Japanese names when they dubbed it.

Yes it did well there, however I believe they kept the names of the american adaption.

There's a link you might find usefull to your question.

Edit: Ok, it did as well as could be expected untill Harry Potter came along.

I think I remember reading that the Raymond Burr version of Godzilla did well in Japan. I find that interesting.

Jet: It's because the Japanese were fans of Perry Mason.

Not surprising. His role in the first Godzilla was actually inserted rather well, even if it did compromise the film's overall allusion to World War II's Pacific Theatre.

Godzilla 1985 was a different story, though. There it was just Burr serving as an uninvolved onlooker surrounded by poorly-acted military types (who were portrayed as Dr. Pepper-drinking idiots, no less) while even more of the film was cut or altered to make room for him than in the original. The only real positive was that the ending for the English version was much more dramatic & tearjerking. Allegedly, the Japanese ending was some cheery "Bye Bye, Gojira!" pop song. Confused

The Japanese like American remakes of stuff. Did you know that they get Power Rangers in Japan too (not the original Japanese Sentai, I mean that they take OUR remakes of THEIR sentai, and then redub it and re-release it, years after it originally aired in Japan). Wink

Let's face it, most American live-action just has better production values. You can argue story, dirrectorial style, all that kind of stuff, but we put MONEY into our stuff. The Japanese like that. Wink

I'd like to see how they react to the live-action versions of animes like DBZ and Lupin.

I'd like to see the Japanese dub of The Ring (American) with subs.
