Magikarp App Splashes Into Smartphones This Spring

A teaser website for the Hanero! Koiking (Splash! Magikarp) smartphone game for iOS and Android devices launched on Thursday. The app inspired by Pokémon's least effective creature is slated to launch this spring.
The website features the front cover of an extra February 16 edition of the fictional Pokémon App Newspaper. The headlines read, "Scoop! Mysterious Holes Appear" and "In a peaceful town, what in the world... !?" The newspaper's article explains that a 27-year-old fisherman discovered strange holes in his town that are about 90 centimeters (about 3 feet) wide at their widest point. (This is the same length that Magikarp is in the Pokémon games.) The fisherman heard a thunderous sound and felt a slight shaking early in the morning. When he went to investigate the source of the noise, the fisherman was surprised to discover the mysteriously shaped holes. The local town hall is reportedly investigating.
The teaser website credits game developer Select Button. The company's Survive! Mola mola! ocean sunfish-raising smartphone game has been downloaded more than 5 million times.
The Magikarp app's teaser website also features a link, disguised as ad for taiyaki, to the official website for the splashing monster's official song.
The Yokohama Kurikoan taiyaki (fish-shaped cake) shop released custard-filled Magikarp sweets last month. A Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon player reported beating the game with a single Magikarp in November.
