I'm actually surprised Pom Poko got off light. I hope they didn't pluck the jewels of the tanuki. But I'm assuming if Song of the South is finally gonna be on dvd, that Disney's finally stopped their policy of censoring animation. Now they need to work on the dub-titling. Personally, I'd rather they release Only Yesterday first, but I might consider seeing the Yamadas again, even if it didn't seem cut together the right. Although I hope it encourages someone to release the manga here, so I can compare the two.

You know, I was actually thinking about Song of the South for a short while. Why hasn't it been released on home video for a long time?

Because the NAACP didn't like it, and Disney was worried it'd be considered racist?

Ahh, song of the South. I haven't actually seen the movie, but the book versions of the Briar Patch are among my favorite Childhood memories.

Is it actually coming out on DVD ?

That, I wasn't aware of. Which parts of the movie were deemed offensive?

Apparently the NAACP thinks Song of the South has "remarkable artistic merit" but doesn't aprove of "the impression it gives of an idyllic master-slave relationship."

Snopes.com wrote:
Disney's reluctance to market it in the USA is not a reaction to an alleged threat by the NAACP to boycott Disney products. The NAACP fielded objections to Song of the South when it premiered, but it has no current position on the movie.

tempest: Well, Digital Bits and Ultimate Disney claim it's happening next year, because it's the 60th anniversary, but we'll see.

Well, obviously, there's going to be another "wave" of Ghibli DVDs released in North America before the end of the year, assuming that the Howl's Moving Castle DVD is coming in September or October.

Not that I'm particularly thrilled by any of those films; I wish the next wave could include Totoro and Whisper of the Heart, the two other Ghibli films I'd buy on DVD, but I guess the speculation that Totoro won't be released until the final "wave" so that they can have a Miyazaki film anchoring each wave does make sense.

Kind of ironic that the same copyright extensions Di$ney pushed for are biting them in the arse on Whisper of the Heart.

Disney lobbied to have ownership of Mickey Mouse for another 75-80 years, and allegedly, they have problems releasing Whispers of the Heart stateside, becase of one of the songs.

Huzzah! Didn't think I'd see Yamadas on US DVD so soon. I'm glad American audiences will finally have a chance to appreciate Takahata's work.

Yeah, I guess, but considering Country Road is only from the 70's, it would still be protected regardless of Disney's squeeze-every-last-cent-out-of-our-dead-founder's-work campaign.

About a year ago I found out that one of the writers of Country Roads was also wondering when Whisper of the Heart was coming out. He was unaware of any copyright problem over the use of the song.

I think the major problem is that it is not a cartoony, action or comedic title. Hollywood seems to have a problem with animation that does not fall into one of those categories.
