My guess at least in this context was a VPN service or some other encrypted network connection similar to a VPN or Proxy that would allow players from this region to still get the loot boxes.. because they would get getting an international IP addy.

could be wrong.

And given enough motivation.. just about anything can be hacked... just sayin.

I'm a little unclear on exactly what laws were violated here. Typically you hack an online game and you get banned from the game, not get sent to prison. Unless you steal real money.

Sounds like this one was more serious because 1) They came up with a way to circumvent payment for in-game goods, and 2) They were selling this hack, and thus they were doing it to make money off of it. Normally, it's a blurry line whether cybercrime can be considered theft, but these guys were diverting people's money that would've gone to the game to themselves, which makes it pretty clearly a criminal matter (in the sense of how law enforcement should be handling it).
