I'm sorry, but how could you write an entire article on AI in anime and not even mention the one actually called "Ai" - that is, Mikaze Ai from UtaPri? He's an idol! He's a robot! He's AI! He sings! He dances! He's a love interest! (in the game anyway, the anime does the usual "oops just look at all the pretty boys" thing). I don't even like him that much, but his existence is one of the most hilarious things I've seen in the idol genre.

I've never seen that one (not even totally sure I've even heard of it), so apologies for my ignorance! Perhaps I'll check it out when I get a chance. |

I was mostly being tongue in cheek.  But Ai being a robot idol in a romance game/anime and this being treated with a completely straight face is hilarious, even by UtaPri standards.
On a more serious note though, one franchise I think the article really should have mentioned is Atom: The Beginning. I guess it's partly covered by the Astro Boy, but ATB goes waayyyyy beyond with discussing and dissecting AI than Astro Boy has ever done, I think it's one of the best treatments of the topic in manga (and anime, for that single cour). |

That one's still stuck somewhere on my HIDIVE "to watch some time" backlog list of shame. I'd heard it wasn't that great, but I still intend to give it a go eventually. I really liked Naoki Urasawa's take on Astro Boy in the manga Pluto. Now there's a story that deserves an anime! |

Since the 80's Cyberpunk era was brought uo, I can't help mention the sexaroid boomers Sylvie and Anri in Bubblegum Crisis. Okay, spoiler[Sylvie actually kills innocent people, but she wasn't left with much of a choice on that matter.]
But yeah, watched most of the anime on this list, which goes to show my love for the theme. |

Huh, I did kind of always noticed that western media seems to be more pessimistic when it comes to things like technology, supercomputers, ais, and the like compared to Japan.

Oof, I remember how Mahoro's second season just completely pulled the rug underneath my feet with the final couple of minutes. Made me not trust Gainax shows for a while (you know, outside of the excellent Gunbuster) because I am not a fan of that kind of surprise attack. But then I started watching Stella Women's Academy, High School Division Class C3, because that looked like it was gonna be a fun time. Which it was.... for most of its runtime.
Fool me once and so forth. Outside of that, I watched and really enjoyed Time of Eve (the movie version), and... well, I watched Chobits, which was good when it stuck to the manga and mostly not when it didn't. (I liked the song that played during the spring cleaning segment in episode 17, and said segment was a nice bit of relaxing downtime between the moments of "light to mid-level drama.) Ah, yeah, and the Armitage III OAVs. (Which had a little bit of both.) Also, not an anime (hence not being included on the list), but you mentioned Tetsuwan Atom/Astro Boy; which brings us to Pluto, Naoko Urusawa's excellent manga based on the franchise and one that has androids all over the spectrum.
It's been forever since I watched it, but spoiler[weren't the two used for assassination purposes, and them running away was basically them not wanting to be a part of that?] Or something to that effect? Or maybe I'm remembering a different movie/series. |

I didn't care as much for the anime (except the soundtrack) and don't remember what changes were made, but Chobits' manga's themes and messages are a culmination of CLAMP's philosophy across works that true love can conquer anything, including societal taboos. The android concept was used as a vehicle for this point, as we see multiple kinds of romances between humans of different classes and statures (...and ageーI guess no taboo was too taboo for CLAMP), romances between androids and humans (including one genius child who falls in love with an android built to look like his dead sister after recognizing her as not his sister), androids and androids (if android love is programmed for humans, is this fake?), and, in Chii's case, romance without sex. There are some slightly problematic implications in some of the side romances (specifically the ones with a power dynamic), but I think the main romance is quite nice once Chii grows out of her artificial juvenile mindset thanks to her sister. I'm not ace specifically, but I identify with the lack of necessity for sex in romance if need be. Also, I had a crush on Chii when I was younger. Oops.

How is Tetsuwan Atom not an anime? Does this mean that you don't consider anime adaptations of manga legitimate anime? |

No mention of Dennou Coil? True, it dealt more with AR, but there were some aspects like the ghosts that might qualify it on the list.

I've simply not got around to watching Dennou Coil yet, it was never legally available in the UK until recently. Now that it's appeared on Netflix (sadly sub-only) I plan to watch it soon. |

You know, I should really re-watch Lain. It's been over 20 years since I last saw it and I honestly don't remember all that much about it. I have the region 1 DVDs around here somewhere, not sure if I still have a multiregion DVD player any more though... |
