With these KPop as well as Babymetal the first Japanese artists to break into US Billboard Top 10 charts - compare and contrast what Americans like about in each Not bad for a movie that Sony gave up on selling to Netflix and had almost no hype - to mainstream music stations playing its songs and becoming the movie of the summer by out-Disneying Disney It's like The Princess Bride or Rocky Horror Picture Show - fans know all the lines and songs. It even "forced" Netflix to go against its rules by releasing it on theaters (Netflix doesn't like to do that, except to qualify for the Oscars) That would be a welcome shot in the arm for movie theaters, after the bleak years of COVID-19, Hollywood strikes, and younger audiences migrating to -- ironically -- streaming. "There were literally so many kids singing their hearts out," said Szany, who attended Netflix's advance singalong, and has watched the film at least eight times. "I was like, wow, they know all the lyrics better than I do." |

Funny how we went from the Emoji Movie to Spider-verse and KPop Demon Hunters. Sony Animation new Kings and Queens of western animation if you ask me.

Been seeing this on my email newsletter and social media, really happy to see where this is going and also for K-pop music as a genre. It's hard to believe back in 2010's, nobody thought that K-pop would be the one taking over the world, and people on ANN back in 2013 that I was crazy to believe that when I warned ANN forumite that K-pop was going to overtake J-pop/J-music.

kgw: You mean part 3.
Anyway, for some reason, Deadline called the film an 'anime'. |

Heh, that's strange. I don't know why would Deadline would call this film an anime when it's not. I thought the journalist at Deadline would be more thorough and more detailed on that. But what can I say. |

Somewhere at Sony, an executive is being strangled for letting this get away.

To be fair, I don't know if K-Pop Demon Hunters would have been a huge success if it was originally released on theaters, I believe that being a streaming film helped it a lot, however, if Sony gave would've gave it a decent amount of publicity maybe it could have become a sort of sleeper hit, perhaps in the 400 or 500 million dollar camp. But yeah, I think Sony Pictures lost a huge potential audience, I'm still not sure who is the new owner of K-Pop DH's rights, it seems Netflix accquired the rights from Sony, but if Netflix wants to make a sequel they have to work with Sony Animation. Still, Sony lost a potential golden (not pun intended) goose, I can imagine tons of spin-offs, video games, comics, animated series, figures and merchandise, etc.
And what about Genndy Tartakovsky's "Fixed"? I actually thought it was okay, but it wasn't as raunchy as I thought it would be, despite the fact that all the people who complained about the premise online said it was going to be just another typical adult shock-comedy cartoon, which it was to a point, but I've seen worse. In fact, the thing that I most liked about fixed was the animation itself, it was very expressive and smooth, though I guess that the people who wanted to see more 2D movie-quality animation expected something else. |

Variety is calling it anime too: How ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Could Make Oscar History and Shatter Anime’s Glass Ceiling A potential double nomination for “KPop Demon Hunters” — in both best animated feature and original song (which Netflix has confirmed would be the chart-topper “Golden”) — would be historic for anime at the Oscars. No anime film has earned more than one nomination in the same year. While the film is a Korean story, it has the DNA of an anime feature. Discussions are reportedly under way about whether to submit a second song from “KPop Demon Hunters” — perhaps a track such as “What It Sounds Like,” written by EJae. Ejae, who provides Rumi’s singing voice and co-wrote original music for the film, described the project as a rare opportunity to merge K-pop and anime influences.
Sony Lost Big On KPop Demon Hunters’ Record Success: According to industry fixture Matt Belloni, the problem is how this original deal was structured. Sony made KPop Demon Hunters for $100 million, then sold the rights to Netflix. Now, reports are that Sony will end up making just $20 million in profit on the deal thanks to those terms, as anything that happens from here, that’s all Netflix, since they own the property. At the time, that probably sounded like a deal that was just fine. It’s a good movie, it would be fed into the Netflix conveyer belt of content, be watched, and everyone will praise it for a weekend and move on. But the rest is history, of course. As for Sony, its involvement in what happens from here is unclear. Netflix, of course, needs someone to make these future movies, and while Sony largely missed out on the success of this first film, I imagine that will not slip away the second or third time around. |

Happy for the movie. No one saw this coming. Crazy that we just now have more official merch coming from Funko and Youtoonz. Not sooner and with more companies.
