Appreciate the article, and I say this as someone that watched the whole VOTOM series/franchise (I do have the SD-BD/BD combo collection BTW). Oh, I want to to say this about this from the ANN article:

Quote:
“VOTOMS is not a flashy anime for kids. It has many levels that adults can enjoy as well. I think VOTOMS fans are true anime fans.”

Yep, Japan was ahead of the adult animation genre before the adult animation in the US started to catch up like what we're seeing now. If you have anyone that are watching adult animation like let say Vox Machina, or any mature/adult animation that are not Japanese anime on Netflix, I could recommend VOTOMs along with the well-known ultra-gory OVAs from the 80's and 90's that could find new audiences in this current environment.

VOTOMs is not an easy anime to digest not only because of the animation has not aged well, but because the story is a slow burn, I can say this as someone that watched all 52 episodes along with several OVAs that were included in the BD collection. Oh, and for anyone that is a fan of Battletech/Mechwarrior franchise, they might find the story in VOTOM appealing to those Battletech fans because the story in VOTOMs may look a bit similar to Battletech. So VOTOMS could find a growing crossover with the Battletech fandom (yes, I'm aware of the Dougram/Battletech connection). So that's all I have to say.

I feel like I know VOTOMS pretty much entirely through the Super Robot Wars series where it shows up an awful lot despite not having any new content in a loooong time. I suppose it's one of those where the Scopedog is so iconic that why not? I imagine it not having a lot of entries in so long makes it a lot cheaper to license.

I do like VOTOMs- some all time great designs- but the main series really can be painfully slow.

Mellowlink, The Pailsen Files and Roots of Amibition are all much pacier entries which are a good way to test the waters (if you can get hold of them).

I loved how the show portrayed mechs in a somewhat realistic fashion. Pilots having to mindful of how much equipment they loaded on them, and using skates to move around. Despite loving that aspect, I just couldn't finish the show. Dropped it a few episodes into tbe second arc. I do respect it's legacy and what they were going for!

Luckily I have that release sitting on my shelf. Someday I'll find the time to sink my teeth in to it.

Yeah, same here. I thought it pronounced: Vo-Toms, not "bottoms". Shocked Laughing

VOTOMS, along with Dragonball, One Piece, Detective Conan, Oh my Goddess, Cardcaptor Sakura, Ranma 1/2, LOGH and Gundam 0079/X/Wing/Turn A... was my 90's anime life.

Never heard anyone pronounce it 'Bottoms' either, though to be fair they don't really use the term in the show itself usually just referring to AT, the model of the suit or pilots as soldiers so I could understand some Engrish pronunciations.

I'm so glad I'm not alone on the struggle Laughing
I love it, but man the original VOTOMS is a hard watch. I like slow anime and I'm used to anime from this era being slow on the animation side too, but VOTOMS is SLOW slow. It takes almost the entire series for the pacing to pick up, but it's kind of the point, I guess, what with the post-war world. You really feel the aimlessness of Chirico.

Love the Scopedog too. I look at my model kit whenever I feel down Laughing

Despite being a long time mecha fan, I still have yet to watch VOTOMS even though I’ve known about it for as long as I’ve been an anime fan! I’ll definitely get around to watching it one of these days since I actually do want to see it.

Votoms is one of my favourite mecha series, but it definitely takes its time revealing what's going on in a way that's unimaginable in this era where very few properties get even 24 episodes to work with. I think Shining Heresy might be my favourite of the Votoms OVAs. It adds new angles on the setting and has great fights without resorting to some of the sheer craziness of Pailsen Files. And it has Titania, one of the more interesting antagonists in the series.

The OP Honoo no Sadame is a classic:

There is also a great live performance of it on Animelo Summer Live 2012 -INFINITY- 8.26 [Blu-ray], which might be available secondhand.

I love the ED music for the show better than the OP music. For those of you that don't know the name of the song, the name of it is Itsumo Anata ga.

Votoms is a masterpiece and the best mecha anime ever created, IMHO.
I don't believe it is slow. Mobile Suit Gundam is slow. I've never been able to finish it.

I like all the Votoms characters. There's no annoying kids and Chirico is a cool protagonist.

A lot of the old mecha/super robot shows haven't aged all that well (storytelling-wise), but Votoms stands the test of time.

Yeah its not really slow because its proper Space Opera not an episodic action series. Its telling individual stories across arcs of a dozen episodes in a fully realised galaxy spanning setting, a galaxy that has been brutalised by a century long war between two major powers but is also home to something far older and more sinister lurking in the shadows.

I watched everything Votoms, starting around the time Pailsen Files was released. I like Votoms more than Gundam.

Unfortunately it was never released here in France.
