I already know one animated feature I'm seeing this summer!
If I like it enough, I'll see it the same way I did Howl's Moving Castle. Once dubbed, once subbed. Then, I'll get the DVD (or maybe Blu-Ray if we're lucky this year) when it gets released later in the year. I don't think the DVD release should come later than mid-December 2009, probably November in time for Thanksgiving... |

Well if it gets a wide release, then I'll make sure to see it. I live in a decent sized city, but as far as I remember, we never got Spirited Away here, and before that I think Princess Mononoke ran in one theater for less than two weeks before it got pulled in favor of Half-Baked.

Hope it gets a wide release. Only anime that's ever come to theatres in my town is stuff like Pokémon and those one-night-only event showings of stuff like Naruto and FMA. The cheap theatre in my town actually had Howl's Moving Castle, but only for a week. Too bad for me I didn't find out about that one until Friday night

There's no way it's going to get more than 1,000 theaters, at best; but for an anime film in the U.S. that'd still be quite an accomplishment. Surprised they're finally interested in us so much, since Miyazaki claimed all this time that he only worried how his stuff would do in Japan. Is the yen that screwed over because of Bush and the LDP? I'd kind of feel bad if this sucker ends up doing the anime equivalent of Iron Giant at the box office, but I'm hoping the home video audience has grown enough to wanna see more Ghibli. There were quite a few people at the El Capitan screening of Howl, if that's any indication of Miyazaki's appeal in the U.S.

Having seen the movie, I can understand why there are higher hopes for it in the American box-office... it's far less complicated and much easier to follow compared to "Princess Mononoke", "Spirited Away" or "Howl's Moving Castle" - in fact, in terms of plot, it's a throwback to the days of "Totoro".
That said, in terms of visuals, I still think the audience in the west will have trouble swallowing this one. It's not just that 2D has been dead for almost a decade, but on top of it, some design decisions will just feel strange and uncomfortable - there are several elements that were left undetailed and feel sketchy. Yes, I suspect it was done on purpose - but not everyone is going to like this style. Not sure about the Oscars too - next year it's going to be an uphill battle just to get nominated (with films like "9", "Coraline" and "Up" competing). |

Raz: If 2-d is "dead", then there wouldn't be a market for anime, South Park, or Family Guy. Plus, that Simpsons movie made a nice profit, and no one even likes the show any more. What's dead is any sense of creativity in the American animated film industry. Especially when Neil Gaiman resorts to borrowing from Ghibli even more than Lasseter. [Cue testorschoice counter-argument.

Misty: Hey, her last movie made money, and she got a lot of attention from those Palin comparisons. Whether or not you like her, she is a selling point for people who've never heard of Miyazaki or Ghibli. |

It would be eligible for an Oscar in 2010 if it were released this summer. For a movie originating outside the US, in order to be eligible for 2010, it must have premiered in theatrical form outside the US after Jan. 1, 2008, and it must have premiered in the US during 2009 and had a qualifying theatrical run in Los Angeles of at least 7 consecutive days. The film did have a US screening in 2008, but that is also permitted without voiding the film's eligibility. |
