A Ga-Rei Zero BD box set? That sounds delicious.

I think the Haibane Renmei BluRay box looks sounds even more delicious. I'll have to look for some screenshot comparisons.

You'd both likely be disappointed. Neither of these shows was animated in HD, so they're both upscales. But the approach taken for these two is at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Ga-rei Zero was done competently without adding DNR and without the edge enhancement that was on the DVDs. It's as good as the show will ever look.

Haibane Renmei is hideous. It was never a pretty looking show on DVD, and they tried to "improve" it for blu-ray. The result is a huge amount of added sharpening and smeared edges. It's somewhat like the Funimation upscales that people complained about, but worse. As far I'm concerned, the unimpressive looking DVDs were better.

With upscales, while Funimation has greatly improved their act after all the complaining, Japanese releases have unfortunately gone the opposite direction. It's now a guessing game as to whether it'll be any good or not. There's no safe purchase without seeing screenshots beforehand.

I'm sure this is explained somewhere but why are these ranking posts so often missing ranks - like this one seems to be missing #1, #6, #8? Confused...Question Thanks.

The missing ranks are discs not related to animation (e.g. live-action movies, music videos).

You can find the missing ranks in the "Source", in this case, this: http://www.phileweb.com/ranking/bd-top20/
So, this week's first was a Hollywood movie, Sherlock Holmes.

I'm surprised to see The Blind Side in the top 10. I didn't think an American football/anti-racism didactic film would find much of an audience in Japan.

Thank you - didn't quite get it that it was "anime" rankings within the general DVD/BD rankings.
