I was late jumping on the Cross Game train, but after hearing too many good things about it I just collected the previous volumes a short while ago, and it did not disappoint at all. I'm not a sports fan, so unsurprisingly all the baseball moments really are the most boring parts, while the rest of the human-drama story in between is what succeeds at keeping me hooked.

I just finished #4 last night. I agree with the review that the author does break the fourth wall fairly frequently, but it's not bad and only happens in brief panels here and there.

Worth the read even for non sports fans, but yes, having even a basic knowledge of baseball will certainly increase enjoyment of the game. Or possibly detract from it as the lead character is capable of near superhuman endurance.

In any case I can hardly wait until the final volume comes out.

I have all the Viz published Cross Game so far, and when I first go into it went on a minor reading spree of the scanlations. I do like this series and fully intend to pick up the other four omnibuses that Viz will put out, but looking at it in retrospect...

I find myself annoyed with how the author feels he can reiterate the same major lines again and again, and we're supposed to pick up on the cues of why it's slightly different here then the five times before. "Show don't tell" is a skill writers struggle to master, and here the author gets it and can use it well. Except sometimes I don't know what he's showing me, and the scene is lacking any sort of tell for me to pick up on what I'm supposed to be getting here.

I think the story is one of the few where it has a problem of playing the cards to close to the chest, and in the end I feel the author is actually withholding some character emotions and drive thats intended to come across.

All in all this is a minor issue and annoyance that I picked up while reading the series, that again I do enjoy.

Would people recommend this to a non sports fan? All I know about baseball is that it's like a more exciting version of cricket...

The characters are certainly the stars of the series and it's more about their interactions about baseball, but there is quite a bit of ball playing. You will pick up at least a cursory knowledge if you read the series, but as a non baseball fan I was engaged for the most part.

I certainly would. I don't like baseball at all. But just like Adachi's Touch, I love this manga and I think it's the best sports manga I've read. Maybe except Hikaru no Go.
