This was my second ACen. I'd concur with the estimate of about 1,000 for the Kalafina concert… maybe 800 on the floor and another 200 in the balcony (where I was). Agreed that doing "Magia" as the fifth song or so was a curious choice, but I like it… it would be conventional for a band to do their best-known song right off the bat (but then what's left for the casual fan to look forward to?) or at the end (but then you're just waiting and waiting for the hit single?), and plopping it in the middle helps convey an sense of "we hope you like this, but we do a lot of other songs we think you'll enjoy also." I saw My Chemical Romance a few years ago and they too buried their best-known song, "Welcome To The Black Parade" right in the middle of the main set, with no special lead-up. The thing where the band poses for photos at the end of the concert with the audience behind them (which are later posted to their blog)… is this a thing in Japan? In lieu of a traditional encore? ACen foot traffic seemed a little better this year, since the exhibition space used for the dealer's room last year was a sparse "restaurant" space this year, allowing for an easy cut through from the Hyatt area to the Stephens lobby (and from there to the dealer's room and artists alley). |

It's probably a good thing I wasn't there. The Madoka song and the Sora no Woto song back to back probably would of put me in a fanboy coma.

Yeah, I would have loved to have had that photo for the article header, but sadly, I couldn't get an official copy of it. (And for the record, I was sitting almost directly behind the guy with the sunglasses, about a third of the way back on the floor, in an area where a lot of industry reps were also sitting.)
Strongly agreed on this point. That restaurant was always stuffed and a traffic hazard in its proper location (especially with one of the cosplay photo shoot areas almost directly outside its side doors), so moving it to that floor space and bumping the dealer's hall to the bigger room was a huge help. Having to line up just to get into that huge dealer's hall/Artist's Alley space was somewhat annoying, though. And boy, was it a good thing that I went in with a limited budget, as I could have easily blown several hundred dollars in there otherwise. (I'm not normally a figures collector, but there were some very nice figmas of SAO's Asuna, amongst other treats.) And for anyone wondering about coverage of other panels, bad traffic on Friday kept me from getting on-site in time for the Sentai Filmworks panel and the Crunchyroll, Viz, and Aniplex panels all conflicted with each other and/or the interview ops. (Gee, which is the priority: a one-on-one opportunity with one of my favorite anime-related musical acts, or an industry panel?) I did catch the tail end of the Aniplex panel, and they did announce one thing that may be of interest but was too sparse a detail to warrant a separate article: the Blue Exorcist movie will have its American debut at Anime Expo. |

The highlight of my ACen was Asakawa AND Kalafina noticing my nails. They tend to get me a lot of attention.
The concert was really good, Asakawa was really fun, and the Funi panels were great. The Lupin III one was really good too, Sonny giving some interesting insight into the series and production. |

Would have loved to have seen Kalafina. Maybe one day.
Not surprised that Brad Swaile was there for the Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail premiere. Had a chance to see and speak with the main cast members of Black Lagoon (Brad Swaile, Maryke Hendrikse, Brian Drummand, Dean Redman) during Fan Expo Vancouver this year (plus get their autographs  ). Was interesting talking to them, as they're all local, and getting their perspective on the industry and the different characters they've portrayed. I'm glad that Funi was able to get all of original English VA's for the Roberta's Blood Trail OVA's, as it brings things with Black Lagoon to a fitting close.

Yeah, I would have liked to have some pics for the Kalafina stuff, but taking them was expressly forbidden at the concert and ran into some problems with them concerning the interview. Those problems with definitely not happen if I get a chance to do something like this next year.

It seems like the big exhibition hall line was just for the 10AM opening, though. On both Saturday and Sunday, it seemed like you could just drop in any time after 11AM, by which point the initial line had been filtered through. The other thing that struck me about the exhibition hall was the prominent location of the Daisuki booth: the first thing you hit was Funimation and Crunchyroll, but veering just slightly to the right got you in range of Daisuki. All they had to offer was bags and info cards (I don't recall them even having a TV showing their shows?), but seeing all those "D" logos over the weekend certainly adds up. Considering how many other Japan-based attempts to enter the US market have gone nowhere (Nico Nico, Funico, etc.), I guess you have to give Daisuki credit for actually launching and making a genuine go of it (same goes for Anime Sols [who didn't have a booth, AFAIK]… their site is up, it registers users and streams video, and that's not easy). First time in years I haven't bought any prints in an Artists' Alley though. Too much My Little Pony and Doctor Who pixel-craft, not enough frame-worthy sad-girls-in-snow. Maybe at JAFAX… |

Final Kalafina question from me: they showed a bunch of official Kalafina music videos on the side-stage screens before the concert. These don't seem to be available via the usual video sharing sites (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.), although a number of live performances are easy to find.
Is Kalafina playing keep-away with their music videos (maybe they sell them on DVD)? Is this common for Japanese acts? |

I've got a couple of Kalafina music videos that came with limited edition versions of the singles for the same song. That sort of thing seems to happen somewhat regularly for many artists. I don't think that PVs get bundled on to discs very often, but I'm not usually looking for them. I might get them if I'm aware of them; I've got two or three Utada Hikaru PV collections on DVD. |
