In ep. 23 'Hot Springs Planet Tenrei', the following characters appear: Urt, Ark, and Handull. If you had been a fan of the Future Retro Hero Story Mangas by Takehiko Ito, you would have know that those three head priests showed up often to be a pain to Juji's crew. So it makes no surprise that they show up in FRHS's spin-off series Outlaw Star. Also as they mention a red-haired hero near the end of the esp, they are referring to Juji Thomas Godah who could possibly be Gene's ancestor.
In the American show Firefly, when the character of River was found, naked and in a fetal position, in a cryogen unit, this was most likely an homage to Outlaw Star, where Melfina was discovered in the same manner.
During the opening of the series, if you go frame by frame right when Gene is firing his gun, you'll notice the word "Bang!" appears very briefly in the middle of the gunblast.
Fred Luo, the notoriously homosexual weapons dealer within Outlaw Star, makes a guest appearance within the first episode of the spin-off Anime, Angel Links
Outlaw Star is based on a 1997 manga series of the same name by Takehiko Ito. That series is, in turn, a spin-off of an earlier parody manga series, also by Ito, called Space Hero Tales ("Uchuu Eiyuu Monogatari," also known in English as "Future-Retro Hero Story"). The Outlaw Star anime series has its own spin-off TV series, Angel Links.
According to the concept art of Melfina, originally she had the ability of generating light shields to protect herself and other individuals.
As part of Cartoon Network's standards on editing out and altering unsuitable content(example: blood shed, nudity, profanity, or any type of inappropriate material) for the TV airings of anime for its daytime and Adult Swim slots during the early 2000s, this series was among the anime to receive this treatment. Among the most notable content to be altered for this series was for all of the scenes of Melfina being nude, the TV airings instead had her portrayed as wearing tight black shorts and a sports bra. However when Adult Swim did reruns of this series in 2018, it was presented in its uncut format.
Jim Hawking’s name is likely based on the main character of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, "Treasure Island".
In episode 1, the footage used in the opening scene actually originated from the unaired pilot episode, recontextualized to be a battle set in the future. As it featured Gene wearing the pilot episode’s grappler combat system headset, which defers from the headset Gene uses for the remainder of the series. Making this episode the only appearance of the earlier headset being used.
In episode 1, during the fight with Death Rob, Gene is seen wearing a long-sleeved version of his outfit under his coat. This version of his outfit only appears fully within this episode, although for the remainder of the series, Gene is briefly seen with long-sleeves every time he removes his coat.
In episode 1, for the English dub, Jim refers to him & Gene’s business as "Starwind and Hawking Repairs". However, for the remainder of the series, their business was referred to as "Starwind and Hawking Enterprises".
In episode 1, When Jim did a background check on Rachel by using his PDA, several lines of information on Rachel can be seen which includes her biological information on her height, weight, blood type, and a birthdate. Her birthdate which is June 7, 1988 happens to be the same month and year in which Takehiko Itō's manga Uchuu Eiyuu Monogatari (Future-Retro Hero Story) began its serialization.
The three members of the Kei Pirates who appeared in episode 1, were each not referred to by name in the episode. Even the end credits of the episode only referred to each member by the a non-specific name. They were, however, were referred to by name in the original Outlaw Star manga. Their names are the following: Guugaku(tall swordsman), Roi Fong(old man), & Soi Len(woman).
