Lauren Bacall is popular in Japan, and as a result, she and Miyazaki hit it off when they met.

The anime is based upon the book written by the Welsh author Diana Wynne Jones although the story differs slightly within the anime.

Despite popular belief through fans and media promotion, Howl's Moving Castle is NOT 100% traditionally hand drawn, as studios Gonzo and T2 Studios are credited with involvement through Digital Animation and documentaries regarding the making of the movie also provide proof to the contrary.

There is a scene in the movie where Howl goes to his room. Sophie follows after but to discover the passage has been warped into a passage with two diverging paths. This scene mirrors another scene in an older Miyazaki film called Whisper of the Heart. (In Whisper of the Heart, the passage was made out of precious gems) Once Sophie enters Howl's room directly after this scene gems, specifically an emerald, are shown pointedly to the camera as if to confirm the previous scene

Mamoru Hosoda was selected to direct the film but he abruptly left the project. Hayao Miyazaki then took up the director's role.

Upon seeing Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi, Christian Bale immediately agreed to play any role in this film.

In the Japanese version Chieko Baishô plays both Young and Grandma Sophie, while in the English dub it is split between Emily Mortimer as Young Sophie and Jean Simmons as Grandma Sophie.

Although the film was not released in the United Kingdom until 23 September 2005, director Hayao Miyazaki personally traveled to England in the summer of 2004 to give a private showing of the film to Diana Wynne Jones.

Jean Simmons last cinema film.

Sophie's city was modeled after Colmar, France.

Pazu from Castle in the Sky, makes a cameo as one of background characters.

Emily Mortimer was chosen to voice the young Sophie in the English language version of "Howl's Moving Castle" because the producers felt that her voice resembled that of the young Jean Simmons, who voiced the old Sophie.
